Chub Cay Restaurants

  • Chub Cay Club

Restaurant is the only place to eat, and it has two sections - one for Club members and one for non- members. Restaurant good but expensive- cost $40 to $50 for the 2 of us to eat, picking the cheapest stuff (no $29 lobster), and drinking water. I asked for riggatoni, and after a considerable period they came back and said they were out of the...

Since Chub Cay is a Bahamian port-of-entry, you can visit by boat or aircraft. We usually enter by boat. This is about entering via plane.

There is a newly paved, 5,000 foot airstrip for private and chartered aircraft.

    CHUB Airport

    AUTHORITY RUNWAY (L x W)
    MYBC runway 5,000 x 80
    - No Fuel
    - Yes Airport of Entry
    - Private airport

ENTERING THE BAHAMAS - You must land at an Airport of Entry upon your initial arrival in the Bahamas. You will not be permitted to land in the Bahamas after official sunset or prior to official sunrise

UNCONTROLLED AIRPORTS (such as Chub): When approaching airports with no control facilities you are required to announce: Aircraft identification, Location, and Intentions over Unicom frequency 122.8 - Pass over airport at 1,000' MSL and enter LEFT traffic pattern. All landings and takeoffs at uncontrolled fields shall be into the wind.

Normal hours for Customs & Immigration at Airports of Entry are: 9 am - 5:00 PM. Bahamas Customs requires that the pilot complete and provide:

.Four Inward Declaration/Cruising Permits (if available) if you will be
traveling to more than one island, or
    .Three General Declaration (C7A) forms
.Arrival report (towered airports or twins)
.Proof of citizenship for every soul on board

The following items are prohibited from entering the Bahamas:

    .Dangerous drugs and hallucinogenics
.Firearms - firearms must be declared at first Port of Entry to be turned over to Customs and held until departure
    .Live plants
.Mechanical spear guns (non-mechanical Hawaiian slings are okay)
    .Haitian woodwork

Cancellation and filing of flight plans from Out Island origination is best accomplished en route at altitude. Relaying of cancellations through other aircraft is commonly used due to limited communications range, although this practice may not always be sufficient.

LANDING AND TIE DOWN PROCEDURES AND FEES - Although most would recommend you tie your plane down, Out Island airports don't usually have ties. You can bring your own chocks or use rocks.

When I ordered a pasta dish from the restaurant, it was a long time before they came back and said they didn't have any. They had gone to this little grocery store and opened it up to see if they had any pasta there that they could use. (They didn't)

In any case, this is a combined grocery store (small), liquor store and gift shop. The lady that runs it comes from Nassau, and sometimes it isn't open all the hours that it says it will be.

Their bread is supposed to be good but the locals won't make any unless all the bread is gone. They still had some Wonder Bread when we were here, so we didn't get to buy any of the home made bread.

    What to buy: Home-made bread
    Straw placemats $6.00
Red Bay handwoven basket $22.50 and my DIL tells me that is an exceptionally good price for that type of basket.
    Man's T-shirt $22.00

What to pay: I spent a total of $50.50 for those items.

Chub Cay lies to the east of Bimini and only 35 miles from Nassau. Departing Northwest Channel Light en route to Nassau, travel 14.8 nautical miles to a point just south of Mamma Rhoda Rock, which lies immediately west of Chub Point Light. Then proceed north between the two, being careful to avoid the reef south of Mamma Rhoda Rock, into Chub Cay Marina.

Equipment: Chub Cay says they have a full-service marina.

Dock rates were $1.35/ft for the first 30 days, dropping to $1/ft for up to 60 days, and after that 60 cents/ft. All plus 8%. Cable TV is free contrary to the brochure, if your cable will reach. RO Water is 35 cents/gal, and electric is 35 cents/Kwh, but I had trouble reading the meter, so they charged us $5/day. There is an internet connection, for which they charge $3/min, and you call long distance to the states. Laundry (2 washers, 1 dryer) $3 per wash and $3 per dry-coins from marina. A lot of the phones didn't work. There are only 2 toilets on the transient side. Unless you are at the members docks or on a face dock, (which we were), there are no finger piers and you have to get off of the boat over the bow or stern. Since we were at a face dock meant for big boats, there was only 50 amp, and no splitters (or only one which was in use).
