At night, between April and June, small groups of visitors led by a local guide stroll the beach of Grande Riviere to watch leatherback turtles lay their eggs. The huge animals make a great effort to climb onto the beach and dig a hole. Watching them is a unique experience, the more so because some conservancy measures are in place --the beach is only accessible with a permit at night-- and a local group does a commendable job to organize it and raise awareness about the threats facing the turtles.
