Well, perhaps it's not off the beaten path for most tourists of Trinidad, but the Asa Wright Nature Reserve and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary are supposed to be wonderful for birdwatchers and nature lovers. There are hundreds of species in Trinidad, many you'll find at these two places. If you go with Trinidadian friends, believe me when I tell you that the average Trinidadian has not been to Asa Wright...most of my friend's friends didn't even know where it was...reminded me of all my New York friends who had never been to the Empire State Building...here are some pelicans which you won't find at the reserve or the bird sanctuary, but were the closest I got to any birds...

If your a birder like I am, then Caroni Rice Fields in the central plains might be worth checking out during certain parts of the year. Large concentrations of wading birds are found here. They find it irresistable. Tractors churn up myriad invertebrates which the birds feed upon in large numbers.

Down path to your right about a mile, then down a lot of steps, and you will be at Pirate's bay.
There you will find a nice little beach and calm water.
    The perfect place to snorkle.

Parlatuvier, is a tiny fishing village on a strikingly beautiful circular beach.
There is a school, a small store, and a few rooms for rent here.

    Bay hopping

Along the northern Westcoast there are several small hidden bays. This one is near Black Rock...just a small bar, a few fisher boats, that's it.
No hotels, no tourist hype, no postcard shops...

Balandra beach and Toco lighthouse are on the Northeast coast and worth the drive. From the Toco lighthouse you can see Tobago 7 miles away
