THERE ARE 40FT DROPS WERE YOU HAVE SPONGE-ENCRUSTED ROCK ON BOTH SIDES OF YOU. YOU WILL SEE RAYS,SPOTTED MORAYS,SNAKE EELS AND BARRACUDAS,I EVEN SAW A OCTOPUS.

Well, perhaps it's not off the beaten path for most tourists of Trinidad, but the Asa Wright Nature Reserve and the Caroni Bird Sanctuary are supposed to be wonderful for birdwatchers and nature lovers. There are hundreds of species in Trinidad, many you'll find at these two places. If you go with Trinidadian friends, believe me when I tell you that the average Trinidadian has not been to Asa Wright...most of my friend's friends didn't even know where it was...reminded me of all my New York friends who had never been to the Empire State Building...here are some pelicans which you won't find at the reserve or the bird sanctuary, but were the closest I got to any birds...

If your a birder like I am, then Caroni Rice Fields in the central plains might be worth checking out during certain parts of the year. Large concentrations of wading birds are found here. They find it irresistable. Tractors churn up myriad invertebrates which the birds feed upon in large numbers.
Down path to your right about a mile, then down a lot of steps, and you will be at Pirate's bay.
There you will find a nice little beach and calm water.
