    Pulling "Siene"

by Calor Updated Jan 1, 2004

Pulling siene is a term used by the locals. It involves any number of people to 'assist' the firshermen with pulling the fishing nets [siene] from the water onto the shore.

This is a lot of work and a lot of fun to do.

The fishermen then open up "shop" selling their daily catch ranging from kingfish, to carite to shark.

We were fortunate to purchase fresh kingfish and shark from the fishermen.

  • Englishman's Bay -What a wonderful bay

by YouthinAsia Written Feb 25, 2003

Along the Leeward side road above Castaras is blessedly undeveloped Englishman's Bay. This is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL beach that hasn't been developed, yet.
There is a little lunch shack, Eula's, that serves a great Buss Up Shut plate for $10TT. Othere than that there are a couple guys selling carved gourds. The snorkeling along the rightside (northeast) is excellent you only need to go out to about halfway to the point and the reef is beautiful.
Rumor has it that this pristine bay is heading for "development", get there now.
There is a sign opposite the short drive to the beach off of the main road.

  • Grafton Plantation Bird Sanctuary

by YouthinAsia Written Feb 25, 2003

At Grafton Bay the small sign opposite the beach side of the road points to this old copra plantation - DON'T MISS IT!
We had the place all to ourselves at about 8:00am and saw lots of birds, including the blue crowned mot-mot. The old copra processing building has restrooms and a place to sit and watch birds come in and feed. The trails are well maintained and fun to walk. There is a donation can inside the old copra building, this place is a great place to see birds and please donate so they can keep it that way.

Parlatuvier, is a tiny fishing village on a strikingly beautiful circular beach.
There is a school, a small store, and a few rooms for rent here.

Down path to your right about a mile, then down a lot of steps, and you will be at Pirate's bay.
There you will find a nice little beach and calm water.
    The perfect place to snorkle.

Balandra beach and Toco lighthouse are on the Northeast coast and worth the drive. From the Toco lighthouse you can see Tobago 7 miles away

    Bay hopping

by Chilie Written Jul 25, 2003

Along the northern Westcoast there are several small hidden bays. This one is near Black Rock...just a small bar, a few fisher boats, that's it.
No hotels, no tourist hype, no postcard shops...
