  • The Queen Conch - Turks and Caicos Islands
    The Queen Conch
    by ScubaCat, 1 more photos
The Caymans have the Turtle farm and Provo has it's Conch Farm. Several times a week a tour is given to the inquisitive to view not only the hatchery but also the labatory. It makes for a very interesting morning or afternoon diversion, not to mention some very unique photo's. The farm raises what is known as the Queen Conch. One of the largest Conch there is and very, very beautiful with it's pink inner shell. The farm was initially started in order to repopulate the shrinking conch population and still operates for this reason as well as for commercial reasons. On the farm you will find rows upon rows of conch and that's only a few of them, the rest are in the water in various stages of growth. Once the conch has grown to maturity it is choosen to either be released into the ocean or to become someone's tasty treat. There's even a conch island right offshore, where the conch shells are discarded after prying the little critter out. After the tour your welcome to shop the giftshop where there are conch pearls, jewlery and T-Shirts for sale. The cost of the tour is $6.00 for adult and $3.00 for children.

Of all the tours I did, this was my favorite! Our tour guide took us around some remote cays to snorkel. Seeing rays & many magnificant colorful fish. Then we climed aboard the boat to go to another snorkeling spot. Much to our surprise he jumped in the water, dissappeared for a bit & came up with a huge rock. It turns out this was not a rock after all, but a conch. We were going to dive for conch for our lunch. That was so much fun. I believe each of us found on average 5 to 7. Upon grabbing our catch of the day our tourguide took us to another remote cay with a beuatiful white sand beach. He told us to go explore while he made us conch salad out of our freshly caught conch. Hmmmmm, that salad was scrumptious. After lunch we could go explore some more, relax on the beach or go snorkeling out in the bay. The majority of us opted to snorkel, as snorkeling in Turks & Caico's is one of the best places I have snorkeled at, up to that point. Unfortunately the tour had to come to an end, way too soon I might add & upon arrival at the dock we each got to take two of our cleaned conch shells home as a souviner. On a sidenote, I lost all the pictures I had of me diving for conch. I forgot to take the lens cover off the underwater camera. Darn! I knew those would have made for fantastic pictures.

Iguana Island is just that. An island full of Iguana's. This is a protected area, therefore your'e not allowed to leave the wooden sidewalk for fear of disturbing their habitat. Upon arrival you are met by a tourguide who explains the nature, characteristic's, growth and living arrangements of the Iguana. She also explains how they are studied on this island. It's a very interesting tour and you get to see multitudes of Iguana's from infant to old farts, lol. I booked this tour through Dive Provo (the dive shop) so I am assuming you can book it through all the dive shops.

If your here for relaxation or just worn out from the previous days activites...Turks & Caico's has relaxing on the beach down! No need for that beach towel, unless your wet of course, lol. That powdery white sand is as soft as a baby's bottom and the view's that you see...drop dead, take your breath away turqoise blue. If your lucky, you also might get a chance to see JoJo, the resident dolphin. Some people have been lucky enough to be out swimming in the bay when JoJo came up & played with them. Oh, why couldn't I be that lucky? I love dolphins...but then again, I wouldn't have traded my time with Wilbert :-)

We travelled to North Caicos by boat which took about half an hour from Provo. Once we got there we hired some mountain bikes and toured around the island. Much of the island is pretty dull to be honest, with the samey waist high vegetation stretching as far as the eye can see.
    However there are some highlights:
Flamingo Pond - home to hundreds of the pinkest flamingos I've ever seen
Kew - a small town with a couple of quaint little stores, school and plantation etc.
Horestable Beach - typical Caicos beach with white sands and turquoise sea and no people in sight

We booked our trip with a company called Big Blue, and were met by a great bloke called JD who was an excellent laugh, and his friend Maggie. After lunch we went on a boat trip along the coast of North Caicos to another deserted island called Bay Cay.

We flew back to Provo which cost $40.00 each, and the views from the plane were superb.

Worth taking the time to do it if you fancy something different from sitting on Grace Bay every day, and JD made the trip great fun.

    A Rock Iguana

Little Water Cay is about 5 minutes by boat from the Leeward end of Providenciales. It is an uninhabitated island, at least by humans. The main attraction are the Rock Iguanas that live there. There are a number of operators that run tours to the island, each one is met by a Park Ranger who takes you round a boardwalk tour of the iguana's habitat.

Big Blue do a variety a tours around the Turks and Caicos islands, and what marks them as being different to the rest is that they offer trips with an ecological theme, such as kayak trips through the mangroves and guided nature treks. We chose a trip to North Caicos, about half an hour away from Provo by boat. We were met on the beach by J.D. who supplied us with directions and mountain bikes. We toured the island on our bikes for half the day, and then met up again with J.D. who took us for a trip on his boat around some of the small Cays and lagoons on the north side of the island. We had an excellent day and although our day was quite informal, you can have more formalised schedules if you prefer. You can basically do pretty much what you like, and Big Blue just sort out an itineray around your requirements.
Well worth having a chat with them to see what's on offer.

Well how about that National Park. A couple jundred yards of beach and desert scrub carved out between some luxury resort condo developments. Yep, it had pearly white sand, not much else. Maybe one day it will become a real national park and get a port-o-potty.

  • Coral Gardens - Turks and Caicos Islands
    Coral Gardens
    by pugwashman, 4 more photos
Coral Gardens is a small area of Grace Bay that has a coral reef right next to the shore. The actual reef is cordened off, partly to protect it, and also to protect swimmers from being injured. However you can snorkel around the edge of the reef and from the moment you step into the sea you will find fish coming up to you and checking you out. Around the adge of the reef there are also a number of plaques on the sea bed providing information on some of the fish and coral you will see.

It can get a bit crowded so my advice is to get there early. There is a Coral Gardens hotel that fronts the beach at this spot and the beachside cafe is very good and reasonably priced for such a great setting.

Dellis Cay is another uninhabited island inbetween Providenciales and North Caicos. It is renowned for it's shells and also has fantastic stretches of beach.

We went on a tour with a company called Silver Deep, but there are a number to choose from.
