Remember that this is a bit of an old world place at heart, despite the overlay of tourism, and BE POLITE & CONSIDERATE to the locals!
It's the custom here to greet each other with "good morning", "good afternoon" or "good evening" as an opening salutation - something I rather like, personally, it starts things off on a pleasant note. Try it out, you'll get more smiles.

  • Most people imagine heading for a tropical island and living in their bathing suit amongst half-naked tanned bodies. Whether this is a dream or nightmare for you, realize that the island cultures are actually quite modest. It is only the tourist who run around in bikini tops, and it is considered impolite. When walking around town at least wear a T-shirt and some modest shorts. For women sarongs and loose dresses are a comfortable solution to staying cool yet being polite.

  • Just relax here. No one's in a hurry and there's no reason for you to be either. There's lots to do and lots of time to relax and just take in the atmosphere. Also, dancing with natives can have serious repercussions--they will expect you to dance all night long!

  • Remember to drive on the Left side of the road. Also, the roads can be extremely narrow and twisty and along some points covered in pot holes the size of craters.

Going here is like staying in the States more than any of the islands tha I have visited.

This is Coral world which lets you enjoy the underwater experience without getting wet. It was being repaired the last time we were there. I am going to check out this and the area around it for beach snorkelingwhile we are there in March. I let you know what it is really like.

Please wear clothes over your swimsuit in town

  • Please don't walk around town wearing just a swimsuit or without wearing a shirt. I understand that many visitors come here for a beach vacation, and swimsuits are fine for the beach, but once you are in town, put on some clothes! People live and work here and we ask that you show a little respect for our town by not treating it as just an extension of the resort or cruise ship.

  • Slow down! Always greet us with a 'good morning' or other appropriate greeting before continuing. Here on St John we also greet strangers and are happy to help you find your way, but you are likely to get directions like 'its next door to where Grumpy's used to be' and there are virtually NO street signs and if there are numbers, they are apparently randomly assigned. Don't be afraid to ask us, but remember to start off with a cheerful greeting.

  • The locals heartily greet everyone with “Good Morning!”, “Good Afternoon!”, and “Good Evening!” They are very warm and friendly, and loved to be greeted in the same manner. When you do, you will be sure to elicit a giant smile and maybe a good conversation.

    Staying on the Islands

  • The people who live on these islands were always surprised and quite happy when they found out that my family and I were not day trippers from the cruise ships, but were actually staying to enjoy their beautiful islands for more than a week. After the cruise ships left the port we enjoyed the best of the Virgin Islanders’ hospitality. They are very proud of these islands (understandably so), and are happy when they see tourists taking the time to really get to know them.
