Mosquitos /Noseeums

by Kristini

For the most part some people aren't bothered by them. If you are visiting the island be sure to bring bug spray & calamine lotion! When they bite, they itch pretty bad if you are sensitive to them and you won't get just a couple bites, expect alot of bites.

Guide Books

by ChelleBelle888

If you buy a guide book before going, it names all these beaches that have certain things at them. The only problem is, alot of the beaches are not marked. Even knowing the general area doesn't necessarily help. You'll find yourslef thinking, "Am I at Rainbow beach, Sprat Hall beach, Butler Bay, some other place listed on the other side of the island????"We were exploring and looking for snorkeling at certain places and always seemed confused where we were - except for the major beaches.

CAR BREAK INS!

by ChelleBelle888

Locals know what rental cars look like and have the tools to break into them. Many of the rental cars on the island have markings on the top of the driver's door where a slim jim was stuck in. While on the island our car got broken into twice - once at the busy Cane Bay and another time at a hotel. If you go to St. Croix, just take a look at the top of some of the cars....

GET CASH EARLY!

by kglazebrook

ATM's are limited on the Fredricksted side of St. Croix and the only ATM between Fredricksted and Christiansted is at the airport which closes early in the evening. It's 25-30 minute drive to Christiansted where most of the ATM's are.We had a problem at the bank ATM's in Fredricksted not accepting our ATM cards and some of the cafe and/or bars did not accept credit cards.

Sundays on the Beach

by kglazebrook

All of St. Croix's beaches are public and the locals use them heavily on Sundays. If you arrive on a Sunday make plans to spend the day shopping in Christiansted. The locals hang out on the beach on Sunday with their mega-speakers and blaring bass. After an hour of hearing the resounding BOOM-BOOM you'll be less than relaxed and poised to commit a crime. It is not the way to start your vacation.

Hungry Dogs

by happysonnet

I swear I don't know where they come from, but when the sun goes down, the dogs (very very skinny) come out. There were also a lot of homeless people walking arond and they all seemed to be drinking from brown paper bags.. Just be safe if you are new to the area.

Remember to drive on the left

by realde14

Renting a car is the most convenient and easiest way to get around. Do remember though that even if St. Croix is part of the US, that you still have to drive on the left

Look Right !!

by frankcanfly

Although this is a US territory, the traffic patterns are the same as in Britain..... just stay to the left, and look right before crossing!!
