St. John What to Pack

Reviews from VirtualTourist Members

Pack light!

by vanderlust

Bring something to carry items to and from the beach. Pack what you think you will need, put half of it back. You will need swim suits, sandals, light hiking shoes (walking shoes will suffice) shorts, lightweight shirts. The wearing of swimwear in public in town is frowned upon. Leave the evening wear at home. The best dressed people you will see will be in khaki pants and polo shirt. Ladies, leave the heels at home. sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Especially about 7 days after rain on the island, mosquitoes will be abundant at sea level and near fresh water. Take it! Especially water/sand resistant camera If you stay at a villa, you will most likely find them supplied with beach chairs, cooler, towels and some toys. Groceries and staples such as batteries are expensive compared to mainland prices. Bring what you can. Alcohol is cheap in comparison especially rum.

Island Essentials

Island casual is the dress code here. Nothing fancy is required although gentleman may want to have one pair of slacks and a collared shirt handy for some of the swanky restaurants on the other islands. Bring bugspray to ward off pesky mosquitos and no-see-ums.
