So I started my venture at the cruise ship port in St. Thomas. A taxi was needed to get to Red Hook (town). This cost 6 dollars but included a guided speech with a speaker that cut in and out. I was able to almost make out some of the tour. Next it was time to board the ferry. This cost 4 dollars and was somewhat enjoyable. Next another taxi was needed to get to trunk bay. This ride was a 10-dollar ride and once again included the broken speech tour. Finally a 4-dollar entrance fee was required to get into the park. The beach was nice and the sand was warm. The sight had a gift shop that honestly just sold junk and candy bars. There was also a fast food joint that sold tasty hotdogs and French fries. Well good luck and enjoy!!!!

The accolades for Trunk Bay are never-ending. The National Geographic Society has labeled it the world’s most beautiful beach. Conde Nast Traveler and several other publications have consistently voted it as one of the best beaches in the world. Unfortunately, a strong north swell made for poor swimming and snorkeling conditions on the day I visited, but, even had conditions been perfect, I’d be hard pressed to put it in my top handful of favorite beaches. But it’s not a bad place to dip your toes in the water.

Hiking snorkeling and ruins at these bays. Rocky beach. Great snorkeling and sealife. At Little Lameshur snorkel along left side of bay and rocky outcroppings in middle of bay near mooring. Porta-potti are the only facilites.

My St. John Things to Do Tips are all about Beaches. I have arranged them in order of their distance from Cruz Bay. First are the North Shore Beaches. These beaches are for the most part in the National Park. The North Shore Beaches are Saloman, Honeymoon, Hawksnest, Gibney, Denis, Jumbie, Trunk, Cinnamon, Maho and Leinster. Saloman and Honeymoon beaches can be accessed by trail from the NPS facility in Cruz Bay. All of these beaches can be accessed via a rented dingy available in Cruz Bay by either of two dinghy rental opertors. Noah's Dingies You could also rent a kayak at Cinnamon Bay Watersports Rentals Cinnamon Campground and explore the beaches adjacent to Cinnamon in a kayak. With the kayak or dinghy rental you have the possibility of visiting some of the remote beaches and adjacent cays within or close to these North shore bays.

One of the more popular trails on St. John, the Reef Bay Trail begins 4.9 miles east of Cruz Bay on Centerline Road. The trail descends through a shady, moist forest and a dry forest. Along the way, you pass the ruins of four sugar estates and abandoned farming communities. The trail is 2.2 miles one-way and takes approximately two hours to hike. The trail also connects with the quarter-mile Petroglyph Trail ends at a rock pool featuring rock carvings attributed to early Arawak Indians.

    Parrot Beach trailhead

Reef bay is a two mile stretch of sand that is visited by few. I access Reef Bay from the Parrot Beach trail from Reef Bay road. Parrot trail is a short trail down the hillside from the road to Parrot Beach. Mark the beach end of Parrot Beach trail with a stick or something to help you find it on your return. Bring a flashlight as the trail takes you through underbrush that gets dark quickly before sunset. Access to the water is limited by the reef and sea urchins. If you take the hike from Parrot Beach to the Reef Bay rum mill, you can access the bottom of Reef Bay trail. From there it is a 1/4 mi. hike up a reasonable grade to the Petroglyphs and the waterfall (during wet weather) Check the tide tables before you attempt this hike. During high tide you cannot negotiate the rock outcroppings which will be underwater. Bring drinking water & insect repellent as you will find mosquitos and no-seeums at the petroglyph pool and near fresh water. As a reward you will have a seemingly endless stretch of sand to yourself. I have met the occasional surfer and hiker on the beach but that is it. No facilities at this beach unless you consider the pit toilet at the rum mill ruins installed at the insistance of Lady Bird Johnson

    Bridled Quail-Dove

St. John is probably the best of the U.S. Virgin Islands for birding. Among other things, it is perhaps the best place in the Caribbean (and the world) to find Bridled Quail-Dove. The Reef Bay Trail is generally considered to be the best place to find these remarkably tame birds. I saw a half dozen of the birds, always singly or in pairs, on both the Reef Bay Trail and the Cinnamon Bay Trail. The birds were always on shady, rock-strewn hillsides. Other common birds as typical of the Caribbean and include Brown Pelican, Magnificent Frigatebird, Bananaquit, Pearly-eyed Thrasher, and wintering warblers.
