Fort Christian

by agapotravel

Once again, because we went in the off season when there weren't many ships in port, this is the time period when renovations take place and things aren't open as much. Fort Christian was undergoing some restoration while we were there, so I really didn't get good pictures because there are things in front of the buildings. It obviously wasn't open, so I didn't get to explore it like I had planned.Fort Christian was named after Denmark's King Christian V. It was constructed between 1666 and 1671 by Danish settlers. It is the oldest building still in use in the Virgin Islands.

Blackbeard's Castle

by agapotravel

We didn't tour this castle because the day we visited, it was closed. Don't laugh when you see the pictures I tried to get through the gate. :-) If there aren't any ships in port, then a lot of the attractions are closed. This was the case on the day we visited here. On our last day, we did walk by it, and I did get a much better picture. It costs $12/person to enter.

99 Steps

by agapotravel

These famous steps are called 99 Steps, even though there are actually 103. I tried counting 3 times, but all 3 times, I met someone and started talking to them and lost count. I had read in a book that there were actually 103 steps and wanted to see for myself. It's an easy climb up the stairs, and there are lovely flowers along the entire path.

Paradise Point Tramway

by agapotravel

Yes, this is a huge tourist trap, but you have to do it! You can drive yourself up to Paradise Point, but I think you would miss out if you didn't take the tram. It's a modern day gondola. The ride to the top takes 7 minutes. You have incredible views of Charlotte Amalie and other islands on the ride up and when you get to the top. There are shops and restaurants at the top, and even a short nature trail. In my opinion, though, the reason to visit is the view from the observation deck.

Charlotte Amalie

by agapotravel

It is definitely worth it to walk around Charlotte Amalie (pronounced Ah mal yuh), the capital. You can see it from the car, but it's much better to experience the sounds, smells, and locals on foot. At first glance, it looks crowded and a bit run down. However, once you get a closer look, you see the pretty streets, duty-free shops, and lovely buildings.

Blackbeard's Hill

by BigBlueOne

This is a complex of old houses and museums that have been around since pirates roamed the Caribbean. This is a highly recommended trip if you're into antique furniture and/or pirates. There is also a very cool bar ran by a inventive bartender (don't remember exactly what he made us but it had about 15 ingredients), some small shops where you can pick up some souvenirs, and a large collection of pirate statues.

One of the Best Beaches in the World- Magen's Bay

by BigBlueOne

The beach at Magen's Bay is absolutely awesome! For one thing, its huge. So you'll definitely be able to find a place to sit, lay, or whatever. There are hardly any waves because of the protection of the bay. They also have a very cool bar (see pic) that has to have one of the better views ever.

Paradise Point ~ the Ride Up

by Ericasmurf99

We rode the skytram up 700 ft to "Paradise Point", a great place to take some awesome photos, have a Baily's Bushwacker, and play with Parrots. There are 6 of these skyrides, 3 are available at a time, and they rotate every 7 minutes. Feels like forever though when your part of the line is in the sun!

Sky Line to Paradise Point

by BigBlueOne

The actual skyline is not what is so great about this but rather the restaurant and view at the top (Paradise Point). When you get there find out if its cheaper to take a taxi to go at least one way ($19 pp roundtrip for the skyline). If it is cheaper, I would recommend taking the taxi (maybe even both ways) though the skyline is probably quicker.

Sapphire Beach

by shargurl

Great beach with watersports such as jet skis, parasailing, etc. available at a cost. Be sure to get there early if you are on cruise ship so you have time to take advantage. We got there a little later in the afternoon. Beach chairs are available for a cost as well if you aren't staying at the adjacent hotel. There is also a bar, restaurant and a convenience store.
