Equetrian King Sheshi Skenderbeg sculpture placed almost in the middle of this huge comunist square, the best point to start the visit... its just 10 or 15 minutes on foot from the youth hostel walking north-west.. the vast square is full of people at rush hours and the typical men trying to sell albanian money (green banknotes) that i will never rely on them...lol... Be careful this is where the car's rule is a fact and dont cross the streets before the locals ...all is a bloody mess !! Behind the sculpture is place the Et'hem Bey Mosque (1789-1823) maybe one of the most beautiful highlights in this city altogether with the lake, Its one of the most oldest buildings left in Tirana and worth to visit Leave a Comment

The three photos given here show residential buildings. They are not fun but look almost OK. I do not know how they look to day but what I have seen in Shkodra in 2005 was that though there were brand new buildings built, the older one, dating from the communist era, were still there, most of the time in poor condition; I am afraid it would be about the same in Tirana. Tirana, Albania's capital - is a city that is being reborn and growing. Parts of the city are now being revamped, roads are repaved and pavements are repaired. Some buildings are also being totally reconstructed. All is RE-something, in Tirana. The city is not exactly beautiful, though it has its beaty spots and attractions/monuments - but it's a city that is changing - fast. The new mayor has planned for a complete city's face-lift and you can see it happening.
The very modern living side-by-side with the very old and crumbling down. Both are equally fascinating as they show you the scars of Hoxha totalitarism and the enlightment of the new government which is really happening - although western medias might not tell you, yet. The central part is getting remodernized and there's even a revolving glass restaurant on top of a tall building, and there are the onmipresent Twin Towers here, too. Old Tirana, however, is only a few backstreets away. For now - but not for long. Leave a Comment

I have not written down in 1988 what was this building. It looks like some kind of official building. In the front door, there is a guy with a white coat. Then my wild guess is that it is either a hospital or a Sciences University. Who will tell me the truth ? February 2008: Thanks to VT Brikena that wrote me that this was the Maternity Hospital of Tirana. Leave a Comment

These two views were taken from our room in Hotel Tirana. If I am right they should represent a park behind the Palace of culture and the street that stretches across the photo from left to right, should be Luigi Gurakuqi street. Leave a Comment
