Get Your Entrance Stamp When Traveling By Car!

by Greatwalk0

If leaving and returning to Albania by car, making sure to get your passport stamped at the Albanian border when you return! (They do not automatically do this at the Montenegro border crossing) If you don't, you run the risk of some minor heart-ache when departing Albania the next time by air.

General things to know

by frockland

Entry Fee: Travellers of certain nationalities will have to pay 10 € to get into Albania.ATMs & Money: The situation changed totally during the last years. In every city there are ATMs accepting Visa, Master & Maestro Cards. Raiffeisen Bank has these machines everywhere. Changing cash is no problem and takes only a few minutes in a bank. If you decide to change money in the streets be careful like everywhere in the world. The official currency is the Leke. One € is about 120 Leke (September 2005).Language: Due to the long period of isolation there are not too many people speaking English although this is changing now and younger people learn English. At the coast a lot of people speak Italian. Thanx to the TV programs coming from the other side of the Adria. Also some Albanians speak German what they learned while they where working there. Albanians are very friendly and helpful!...

Pure mountain water

by AlbaniaLover

Tepelene water is produced in the town of Tepelene. It comes down from the mountains and is bottled. Sold all over Albania and is one of the best waters it comes in sparkling and still and is the sponser of the Albanian national football team and also seen at the table of a meeting between the government!

Olives

by illumina

Olive groves are ubiquitous around Ksamili and Butrint. They are the remains of collective farms from the communist period. It's sad to see that the olives remain on the trees and fall to the ground - the men who used to work these fields have all gone to Greece.

Language

by illumina

The Albanian language is its own independent branch of the Indo-European language family with no close living relatives. There seems to be no scholarly consensus over its origin. Some scholars maintain that it derives from the Illyrian language, and others claim that it derives from Daco-Thracian (Illyrian and Daco-Thracian however may have been closely related languages. There are two principal dialects, Tosk and Gheg, which have been diverging for at least a millennium, and their less extreme forms are mutually intelligible. Albanian in the Tosk dialect is the official language of the Republic of Albania. Albanian is also one of the official languages of Kosovo, Montenegro, and the Republic of MacedoniaAlbanian has been written with many different alphabets since the 15th century. Originally, the Tosk dialect was written with the Greek alphabet and the Gheg dialect was written with the...

Cars

by illumina

A lot of people have commented on the numbers of Mercedes in Albania, apparently stolen from Germany; and I did see several while I was there, but what really surprised me was seeing so many Smart cars!! I don't think parking is much of a problem in Albania, so I don't know why they needed them!!

Weather

by illumina

Albania can be very hot in the summer, and when I was there in September, it was still pretty warm - temperatures of over 30 degrees C most days. We did however have some spectacular storms, with torrential rain, hailstones the size of eggs (I kid you not), and thunder and lightning. One of my fondest memories is of standing on the balcony of the hotel, staring towards the mountains in the distance, over which could be seen flash after flash of lightning, tinged a strange red-purply colour. I saw both sheet and chain lightning - an unforgettable experience!

Music

by illumina

Traditional Albanian music is a mix of diverse rhythms and melodies. The songs of Albanian music are an oral tradition and have not been written down. Even as contact with other cultures has grown and their influence increasingly evident, Albanians have preserved the integrity of their musical culture. It is difficult to give an exact date for sons, but the themes indicate that many are ancient. The Shkumbin River that separates the north from the south of Albania represents not only a geographical boundary but also a border of language and music. In the north, traditional songs are monophonic and are accompanied by a stringed instrument called the "lahute". The lyrics of these songs reveal mainly themes of epic history that originated in the 15th Century during the resistance wars against Ottoman domination, but songs of love and longing are not missing from the repertoire. In the south,...
