by AlbaniaLover Updated Aug 19, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

We ate here one lunch time as we were driving through Himarë. It was a nice little place, you could sit inside or just across the little road at there outdoor setting looking over the beach. We all had pasta here as the said they only do pizza in the evenings not day time. They also do some greek food.

    Favorite Dish: pasta

Restaurant at Syri i Kalter: Lovely cool setting

by AlbaniaLover Updated Aug 19, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Syri i Kalter is inland from Saranda. In english it means blue eye, you have to pay to visit as it is a local attraction but i think it is worth a visit. The restaurant is set in the grounds surrounded by a fast flowing VERY cold river, set under trees it is lovely to sit here on a boiling hot day. We only had a drink here but the food that we saw people looked good and fresh.

Favorite Dish: Looked like fresh meat and salads here. Also ice creams, beers and soft drinks.

This is a coffee place and bar. In the evenings in the summer it will be packed with the locals, mainly youngsters having a coffee or a beer with friends. You can sit on the roof of the castle and watch everyone going for their evening walk down the main street.

Favorite Dish: coffee, beer or the local water (uji) Tepelene. i also liked ivi limon

Not really a restaurant review but...: Snacks

by illumina Written Mar 26, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Not really a restaurant review, but a tip to say that shops in Albania (at least where I was) do sell crisps, biscuits etc, but if you're a chocoholic, you might want to take your own. They had very little in the way of proper chocolate bars, and what they had wasn't all that good.

  • Restaurants in Albania: How to find something to eat

    by Tobias_Plieninger Written Dec 28, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In general there are not many restaurant with a worm kitchen in Albania.

If you drive along the country with your car you will find guest houses along the street.

    Often they have a grill.

If you are in the city there are not much restaurants.

There are many Cafes there you can get to know the Albania people and talk with them.

You will be surprised how many of them speak German or English.

Be careful !!!! They don't offer warm kitchen.

So if you want to eat something ask before you sit in.

The best way of finding a good restaurant is searching for the grill.

    There are also Pizzeria restaurants.

    In general restaurants are cheap.

It is adviseable to ask before you order.

So you can be sure that you won't have to pay a "special" price!

Favorite Dish: Grilled food is best in Albania.

    various: Italian style cafe society

by sourbugger Updated Feb 13, 2005

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the most surprising things I found when visting Albania was the emergence of an embyonic cafe society.

Due to the interchange of people (and TV) with Italy, the Italian influence on the decor and menus is profound.

One still has to check on prices before drinking/eating, but we generally found owners to be honest - mainly because they seemed so unused to non-Albanian frequenting their establishments !

I also notice that many cafes used plastic purple garden chairs. I suspect that some enterprising individual bought up a massive job lot of them a few years back and made a nice fat profit selling them on.

    Favorite Dish: Beer..coffee..more beer etc

(avoiding Absinthe, I'm mad enough already by being here!)

The real taste of food !!!!

by jordijoan Written Feb 7, 2005

Eating in Albania is quite a wonderful experience. Not because its gastronomy is specially refinated or innovative but because the quality of the aliments is really high. Vegatables taste like vegetables, meat tastes like meat and fruits taste like fruits and not like tu usual industrial food we eat in most parts of Europe. Salads and vegetables soups are simple but delicious dishes (I specially loved the typical greek salad) and a nice way to open a lunch. Then you can eat any kind of meat (all parts of the goat are presents in the menu!) or fish, usually just grilled, served in specially big portions and accompanied by french fries (excellent), yoghurt sauce, vegetables or pilaf rice. The quantity of food served in a meal tends to be exaggerated and price is about 6 euros per person for a complete lunch in an average restaurant, including half a liter of beer and one coffee. Meals are always accompanied by grilled bread (sometimes with oil, sometimes without) and I would say that in any place that food is served you can enjoy a good meal. Pasta and pizza are also easy to find and equally good.
Albanese wine is good and also beer, usually you will be served Birra Tirana , Stella or Norga. I recommend the two first ones, Stella is slightly stronger than Tirana.

    everywhere!: FAST FOOD

by jordijoan Written Feb 7, 2005

A good option if you want to eat very cheap is just going to any of the small stalls serving fast food in most of streets and markets of any city in Albania. Here you can find a variety of food like excellent pizza, meat or cheese cakes, kebab type sandwiches, etc... most of them really taste and usually with excellent vegetables inside. The cost of the food on the streets is usually about 100 leke per one sandwich and less for a pizza, about 60 leke (half and euro) or even less. Note that the prices are always higher in Tirana than in the rest of towns and don't mind if the stall don't looks like to cleanest place in the world, the food and related stuff is well cleaned and treated anywhere in the country.
Another thing i would recommend is entering any bakery and buy some pieces of cake, which are excellent and really cheap. Usually the assortment is larger than you might expect and taken along with a cup of coffee and/or salep is an excellent way to have breakfast.

no mc donalds in albania yet.

when i first saw it i flinched and though:
aaargh, the arches of evil have arrived in albania.
then i just realised that it was an albanian copy.
    quite funny i think.
they really try to make it look like a real mc donalds, so the food probaply makes you fat there just like at the original place.
    better go and eat elsewhere.

    mc albania.

    Butrint Restaurant (Sarande)

by SirRichard Written Sep 7, 2004

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

After walking the touristic area up and down I found this cute local restaurant, one of the few that wasn't turned into a cafeteria or pizzeria. It had a nice terrace with palm trees and the food was quite home made and cheap.

Favorite Dish: I had a vegetable soup and a fresh grilled fish, quite tasty, though not very ellaborated.
Tirana beer and coffee to drink.
I payed 5 euros for the whole lunch.

Where most tourists eat in Sarande is the Burger or Pizzeria of the Maritime Seaside Walk, but if you walk into town you will find these local restaurants that look like school halls, so huge, so empty...

    Nice, uh?

The Sky Tower/Vodafone Tower: Great food and great service

    by Rushi23 Written Aug 19, 2004

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place was amazing, the restaurant is situated at the top of the tower overlooking the whole of Tirana. There is also a revolving bar just above so you can take in every aspect of the city.
The Staff were great, so attentive each time we were there. We had the same waiter so he knew what we like to drink and even how many ice cubes my mum had in her vodkas. This place is like a 5* restaurant in London, beautiful food, good wine and a brilliant atmosphere. You can sit inside or out whichever you choose you can see the wonderful view all the way round.

Favorite Dish: We chose to have a seafood salad made for the three of us. I have never seen so much seafood in my life. We paid about £4 for it which if you ordered that in England you would pay about £25 for it. It was delicious. The whole meal for three of us came to £35, four course with wine. This is quite expensive for Albanians so when you go there you will notice it is mainly diplomats that use the restaurant, or tourists which are very few like us.
