They are surrounded by a lawn. Who is the best to take care of a lawn, to have it tightly mowed if not a flock of sheep? That is what the second photo shows better. However, sheep is not enough and a man with a scythe is a need to finish the job (third photo). Leave a Comment

A little further to the head of Constantin, Kisha e Shën Triada (Church of St Trinity) stands inside the fortress walls at a place where their general orientation turns from north-south to east-west. The east-west part of the ramparts can be seen behind the church on the first photo. It was built in the fourteenth century. The second photo shows the southern part of the church. When we were there, there was a celebration taking place inside and we could not visit the inside. Leave a Comment

On the western side of Kala, there is also a street that runs behind the rampart. It is rather narrow and, as can be seen on the first photo, there is hardly the space for a car. Fortunately, there are few, even in 2007. Moreover, as many houses have a corbelled first level (second photo), being hit by a truck is a real problem. In Kala, it seems that until now drivers have paid enough attention not to scratch and damage the corbelled parts. The third photo shows the view on a new part of the city, downstream to river Osum. Side alleys climb gently into the core of Kala district. Though there were nice and shaded, we did not wander in these inviting alleys, which is a pity, but our schedule was a bit tight and we could not stay several days in Berat, though it deserves it. Leave a Comment

From Kisha e Shën Triada (Church of St Trinity), the landscape is stunning. The photos give a birds eye view on the city in the valley. Photos number 1 and 2 show a new part of Berat, downstream to river Osum. Photo number 3 and 4 (a close-up) show the upper part of the old Christian district of Gorica, on the slopes of Mount Shpirag. The lower part of the district is hidden. On photo 4, the old bridge on the river shows on the bottom right. Leave a Comment

The whole Kala district is completely inhabited and we have not spotted a single house that was abandoned. Most houses, in the typical Berat style, were perfectly kept. Living in Kala must be really pleasant but with some inconveniences : apparently no shops, no school, uneasy access for cars and Mangalem is 1.5 km away from the entrance into the fortress, some 2 or 300 meters lower ! Children are playing around a gigantic head of Konstandini I madh (Constantin the great) stands on the western side of Kala. It is almost 5 meters high, which would correspond to a 30 meters tall statue! It is close to Shen Konstandini (Constantin church) standing behind the statue. Leave a Comment

The museum is situated in a typical house of XVIII century. Just looking the interiors is interesting in itself. Inside, living room and kitchen are recreated in two versions, as they were in town and village houses. Make sure to see the small hidden room were women were supposed to stay when guests would come for diner. Various artefacts and folk costumes are also displayed inside. Price for entry was 1$, inside there is a box where you can put a donation. Leave a Comment Directions: After a while you have started the walk to the castle, there is a sign that direct you on the right, to the museum.

The flag tower is the point of the castle from where you can have the best view of Berat and surroundings. When we were there with our guide we met a man full of passion for his town who told us very interesting stories about Berat and it's history and his ideas about tourism in the future here. One of his ideas was to create a lake in the part of Osum river you can see in the picture, and put there small boats for visitors. I was impressed of his love for his home town. The complex was build in XV century. There are a mosque, a helvetian 'teqe' (bektashian religion) and another building I don't remember now what it was, but actually there were the offices of the Institute of Monuments of Berat. The medieval center is situated on the right when you start the street to the castle. There are direction signs and explanations about the different buildings. It seems that the interior of the helvetian building is worth a visit, but we couldn't at the moment because it was praying time. Nice square, anyway. Leave a Comment
