I have not seen Bukuroshja e Durrėsit (The Beautiful Girl of Durrės) and you will not see it in Dürres. I write a tip about it is because I have read plenty on it and nevertheless have not been able to see a single photo. This mosaic, which dates back to the 5th BC, is one of the most popular historical figures found in Durrės. The Beautiful Girl of Durrės is represented as a young girl surrounded by an ocean of flowers and carrying a lighted torch symbolising the new-born child. It is considered to be the goddess Ilitia or Eilitia, a daughter of Zeus and Hera who was sent by her mother to all women who gave birth, in order to help them through these difficult and decisive moments. During birth, women prayed to her as the liberator who freed the child from the womb It should have been now on display in the new Archeology museum of Durrės open in 2002 but the place designed for her is empty as she has been kept by Tirana Archeology museum, to the great sorrow of Durrės. When I will go to Tiranė, I will for sure go and have a look at this mysterious Beautiful Girl. Leave a Comment

A dual carriage-way boulevard lined with palm-trees connects the city center to the southern part of the city, which was designed as a sea-side resort for meritorious workers. This tourist resort stands 2-3 km away from the city center. We arrived late from Tiran? and left early in the morning for the south, which did not left much time to visit the city. Leave a Comment

Durrės developed during the period between the 1st to the 3rd centuries AD, and became a major trading center and the main port on the eastern coast of the Adriatic. Craftsmanship developed, roads, libraries, aqueducts and odeons were built, as was the Amphitheater of Durrės. At the end of the 3rd century, Durrės became the center of the province of New Epirus. When we visited Durrės in 1988, the amphitheater was closed and our guide had to look for the key to open the gate. There was not much to see inside. Besides the amphitheater, there are several ancient remains that are There is for example a French-Albanian research operation under way on a sanctuary on the Daut? hill of Dyrrachion. It has already given a great deal of earthen ware (statues and dishes) on display in the museum. More on this reaerch at Mission Franco-Albanaise Leave a Comment

The photo shows the whole bay of Durrės, taken from the holiday resort. The city center and the harbor are at the other end of the bay, in the background and hardly visible on the photo. The small pier was certainly not designed for boats but for divers. Leave a Comment
