 | Gjirokaster Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 55 | | Popular Things To Do | Miscellaneous Things To Do Tips | All Tips (55) As the castle is the highest point of the town, it offers fantastic views over the city itself and also the Drinos valley. It's quite a climb upto it, with many steps and steep slopes, but well worth it in my opinion. You enter through a large door and then wind your way through lots of dark tunnels filled with cannon and some tanks (as the fortress is also the Museum of Armaments) before finding yourself in the courtyard; where an American spy plane which was shot down in the 1950's is proudly displayed. Directions: You can't miss it!

Sheshi Ēerēiz Topulli, though named a square (Sheshi) is actually a widened street at the entrance of the Bazar (Qafa e pazarit). It offers an interesting view on Varosh district, on the other side of a ravine. The town Hall and Prefecture stand on one side of the square. The monument shown on the photo says : Nderi I Qyteti, E. Ēabej, M. Kokalari, I. Kadare,* which means : Homage to our fellow citizens E. Ēabej, M. Kokalari, I. Kadare Eqrem Ēabej (1908-1980) studied his entire life the Albanian culture, its development and its evolution. He is a reference for Albanology. His name has been given to Gjirokastra university. Musine Kokalari (1917-1983) was born in Turkey from a Gjirokastrian family and came back to Gjirokastra at the age of 3. She was the first female Albanian writer. Ismail Kadare, born in 1936 in Gjirokastra and still alive is by far the best known abroad. He studied literature at the Faculty of History and Philology, University of Tirana and later at the university of Moscow. Back home, he wrote his first novel in 1963. The first and the second photos (the second is a close up) were taken in 1988. I had been amazed by the strange modern monument that protruded over the roofs of the old city but I had been unable to found what it meant. In 2005, I did not notice it in the landscape and it was only once home, when looking more closely to the pictures I had shot that I discovered that it was still there but weathered, which explained that it did not catch my eye at first! However, that did not tell what it was celebrating! An Internet search gave a few clues but no certainty. I found on the site of Universiteti Egrem Ēabej, (University of Gjirokastėr) that it was named Obelisku, the obelisk, or better First school obelisk. What is this first school remains unclear for me as I found that the first Albanian school was founded in 1633 in Gjirokastra, and it was Greek by language and by culture. However, if this school was Greek by language, then can it be considered as the first Albanian school? The first school in Albanian was founded in Korcė at the end of the 19th. Anybody know anything else about it? Leave a Comment
