    Flag square or Independence square

by JLBG Written Feb 16, 2006

The main square of Vlorë is called Sheshi i Flamurit (Flag square), and is also called Independence square as it is where the independance of Albania was proclaimed in 1911.

In the center of the square stands a monument unveiled in 1972, that depicts an anonymous flag holder, while below are depicted distinguished figures of the movement for the independence of Albania, including Ismail Qemali and Isa Boletini. It is a joint work of the sculptors, Kristaq Rama, Shaban Haderi and Muntaz Dhrami.

I have no special information on this nice house that displays at the same time balkanic features with the wide roof supported by corbels and neo-hellenistic features that should date it from the end of the 19th century.

    Xhamia e Muradi (Muradi Mosque)

by JLBG Written Feb 16, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It was Sultan Suleiman the Magnificient, when he was in Vlora to prepare his naval expedition against Italy, who ordered the famous architect Sinan to design and build this mosque. It was built in 1542. Since the closing down of the mosques and churches in 1967, it has been used as the museum of architecture of the district. It should now have been returned as a mosque.

Mimar Koca Sinan ibn Abd al-Mannan said either Sinan or Mimar Sinan (Sinan the architect) is considered in Albania as a Turkish architect of Albanian origin while in Turkey, he is considered as born from Greek Christian parents in the village of Agirnas near Kayseri, in Anatolia in April 15th 1489 or 1490.

He is regarded as the greatest of Islamic builders, his achievement lying in his solutions to spatial problems in cupola-topped structures. He was active during the reigns of Selim I, Sulayman I, and Selim II, and in 1539 he was named court architect. His masterpieces are the Shehzâde and Süleymaniye mosques, both in Istanbul, and the mosque of Selim II in Edirne (Adrianopolis). He has designed more than 300 buildings. He died in Istanbul on July 17th 1588.
