Drive down the coast to Orikum

In Orikum are ruins of an antient town, located in the
southwest Albania, south of Vlorë . The town was built in
the antient times and its builders were alegedly fighting at
antique Troy. Geographic location made Orikum an important
Adriatic port. Already in 3rd century BC it was used by Romans
fighting against Illyrian tribes, later against Macedonians.
Ruins of ancient theater, town walls, streets and remains of
Byzantine church from 13th century can be still seen here.
Close to the ruins, on the coast, there is Orikum Village built much later.
The village/town with some 3000 inhabitants (varies with summer and winter)
    has got beautiful beaches.
In combination with the sights the place is an attractive tourist destination.

There is a small lagoon closeby.(2.8km)
Liqeni i Pasha-Also known as Laguna e Pashalimanit,
Paschiliman Lake, Paschiliman Sea, Pasha Liman Lagoon,
Pellg i Dajlanit, Pellgu i Dajlanit, Pellgu i Dalanit, Pellgu i Dejlanit
Ha ha so many names for such an out of the way place..

Drive down the coast to Orikum

We rented a taxi for a few hours and made the
trip south in a brand spanking new Merc with A/C
and although I usually travel by public transport,
we had limited time as my travel partner was on
    a short holiday.
the well known beach of Orikum in the bay of Vlora.
Orikum is protected to the east by the mountain chain
of Lungare, to the south and west by the Karakurun
peninsula a fully protected and almost unbuilt and undeveloped on area,
but sure that is changing very fast.

    Recession?

In 2009, it seemed that the worldwide recession had also hit Albania in some places. There were still a lot of new buildings but some stood only as frames and looked as if nobody had worked on them for some time.

    Beautiful architecture

A few kilometers south to Vlorë, my attention was drawn to this not yet finished building standing one hundred meters away from the road, on the hill. It looked like it would be a hotel and I thought this was a fine architectural achievement. It must have a great view on the sea. Next time I drive this road, I will check it as it might be a good idea to spend a night in this place instead of Vlorë

    Vlora, hen house!

OK, this is a cock with its hens! You may wonder why I put this photo on a Vlora page! They wander and forage on a grass square framed with strong railing in the very center of Vlora, on the other side of the street, near Muradi Mosqe. Some one had the bright idea to put them here for foraging in this little green square that otherwise would have not be of any use for anybody!

    Himare

by NickCh Written Nov 29, 2004

Himare is a quaint resort the Albanians are trying to develop between Saranda and Vlore. Not much there at present, but the tour operators will be there for sure in a few years when the transport infrastructure is half-decent. Lovely setting.

The castle of Kanina, and the Island of Sazan are two great opportunities to view Vlora's strongest points, its ancient history and it absolutely breathtaking nature.
