Things to Do

vuno

vuno, Vuno

njonjo Says:  this is a panoramic of the village, it's builded on a mountainside. Try to hike to the top of that hill, further is the mountain of Mjegullosh, there's a great view from the top.

village streets

village streets, Vuno

njonjo Says:  this is a typic street of Vuno. It must have been a very hard work to build the houses and the streets here, all those stones transported up and up in the mountain.

The cypress on the church

The cypress on the church, Vuno

njonjo Says:  In the lower part of the village is the cimitery and this is the church near it. Look at the small cypress on the wall of the church. Locals have a legend: when the tree will die, it will be the end of the world. Hope not.The cypress is declared a monument of nature by the...

tunnels in Vuno

tunnels in Vuno, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Walk around in the narrow lanes of the village to see the architecture. There are some tunnels like the one in the picture. The village constructions are interesting although not well preserved. Only these last years people are ricostructing their houses and building more...

Jal beach

Jal beach, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Great beach, like a huge swimming pool. One of the most beautiful in all Albanian Riviera. It's going to be more crowded from year to year, but it's still fine. There are a growing number of hotels and restaurants and two campings as far. Jal is 3 km from Vuno village (the...

Hotels

....: General view

....: General view, Vuno

njonjo Says:  The hotels are all in Jal beach. There is a growing number of them. By now there are also two campings. But you can camp in any place if you want to stay by your own. Prices vary depending of the place you choose, average price is 25$. In Vuno village there are no hotels,...

Lavdoshi's restaurant: cheap and simple

at Lavdoshi's restaurant

There are 5-6 restaurants in Jal beach, most of them family-runned places very simple but cheap. There's also a mid-range restaurant, you can easily find. Seafood is really cheap in the small restaurants. But you can try meat also, like this lamb in the picture. Vegetarians, unfortunately will not have much choice.
In Vuno village there's only one restaurant, in the center

Favorite Dish: Special plate, ask at Adelina's restaurant for 'pite' early in the morning, kind of thick creppes, fantastic with some white cheese.

Nightlife

Jal beach: Light a fire

We had finished our cigarettes at this moment :(

After a good dinner in one of the restaurants by the beach, we stayed by the fire until late at night, drinking and talking (and had a nude bath also). There are two open discos near the beach, so you can here the music even if you are not right there. There are also some beach volley fields where you can see people playing until 2 am or so, crazy.
In Vuno village there are not many possibilities for any night activity, there is a disco-bar-restaurant in the village where live music is played. If you have a car you can try to join the more lively nightlife in nearby Himara or Dhermi.

Dress Code: Anything you like, but be sure to have something warm for the morning hours.

Bad roads, the only danger

national road in Vuno

This, look at the picture, is what we call national road here in Albania (but there are better roads also). Roads are in bad state in all the Albanian Riviera, except for the Llogara Pass. So, drive carefuly.
Apart from the roads there are not other dangers, the situattion is very calm in this part of Albania.

Off The Beaten Path

Cika mountain

Cika mountain, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Cika erects 2044 metres directly above the sea. It is in the 83rd place in the list of Europe's finest mountains with a primary factor of 1563 metres. ( www.ii.uib.no/~petter/mountains.html )To climb this mountain stop at Llogara and ask in the restaurants there for the...

White roads beach

White roads beach, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Rruget e bardha - White roads is the first beach you will see when you'll face the Albanian Riviera from Llogara. The name comes from the color of stones of the dry torrent that from mount Cika goes in the sea. There is not an asphalted road to the beach, but it's not so far...

Walking to Himara

Walking to Himara, Vuno

njonjo Says:  This was great. Start your walk from Jal beach, ask locals for directions, you have to head south and go after the path, sometimes it gets hard to find where the path continues, so ask people if you are not sure. This is the best way to fully enjoy the Ionian landscape. This...

Aquarium beach again

Aquarium beach again, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Another picture of Aquariumi beach, this was taken at the moment we first saw this beauty. No one was there for all the day except us.

Ali Pasha Fortress

Ali Pasha Fortress, Vuno

njonjo Says:  This fort is in Porto Palermo bay, south of Himara. I slept here one night in 1998 when travelling in south Albania with friends. When exploring the fortress take a torch with you. On the right part of the bay there's a military base builded during communism, there you can...

Beach of Gjipe

Beach of Gjipe, Vuno

njonjo Says:  Amazing. This beach is situated at the end of a great gorge, 100m deep, caved by a small river, almost inexistent in summer. This beach is accessible through a bad road. For driving there follow the road from Vuno to Dhermi, until you see the sign for turning left to Gjipe.I...

Another small beach

Another small beach, Vuno

njonjo Says:  This lovely small beach, called 'Pusi i Peristereve', meaning cove of doves, is very near to the main Jal Beach, north direction. You have to walk on some rocks in the coastline. Or you can easily reach it taking a boat in Jal. Taking a boat is a good way for enjoying some...

Small beach to discover

Small beach to discover, Vuno

njonjo Says:  This wonderful beach, called 'Aquarium' by the locals, is just 20 min walk from the main Jal Beach. There are good possibilities for you to be the only people there. The beach is small and very isolated. The water in front of the beach is sorrounded by big rocks.

Sports & Outdoors

My most extreme sport :)

My most extreme sport :), Vuno

njonjo Says:  This must be declared a sport. I go crazy when these big waves come on shore. It's so funny to see all the people in the beach playing like children with the waves, including men and women in their late 50's. The aim is to let the wave take you away while fighting to hold...

Fishy, fishy, fishy

Fishy, fishy, fishy, Vuno

njonjo Says:  There is not any big thing to catch, just small fishies, but one can have fun anyway and, who knows, you may be much more lucky than the others before you. Most basic equipment is fine. Choose a rock and try your fate.

walking outside the village

Favorite thing: Walk, just walk in nature. Unlike other Albania 'hot' touristic spots that are now full of hotels builded without any criteria, here the situation is still calm in this sense. Leave the center of the village, and it's only you and the voices of nature, and maybe someone with his sheeps.
