Meaning cold water this is the place to be on a hot day. Between Tepelene and Gjirokaster the water is running down from the mountains. You can either walk down to the river for a swim or walk up to the restaurant for a drink or something to eat in the shade of the tree's. Also you can collect fresh drinking water, you see plenty of people stopping to fill up bottles for a car journey. There are also little stalls along the road selling drinks being cooled by the water or a snack. Some people are selling fresh fish along the road as well.

Albania's capital doesn't offer a lot in terms of tourist sights. But it is a very pleasant and spacious city with a vibrant nightlife (at least in summer).
An unusual feature of Tirana are the colorful housing blocks, a great way to conceal the awful socialist architecture and make the city look much more friendly, a bit like 'Legoland'.

    Durres Amphitheater

As an industrial city and commercial port, Durres is not Albania's most attractive city. There are, however, still some traces of the city's glorious past to discover.
Parts of the city wall are still intact and right in the center there's an ancient amphitheater, whose grounds are now used by grazing cows.

Saranda is the most popular beach resort on the Albanian Riviera.
It's a typical Mediterranean coastal town with a crowded beach and plenty of cafés and restaurants on the beach promenade.
On summer nights the promenade is a wonderful place for people-watching and enjoying the festival atmosphere.

    The Albanian Riviera around
    Dhërmi

The coast between Saranda and Llogara pass is known as the Albanian Riviera. From Saranda to Dhërmi, a great part of this road was in 2007 narrow and in bad condition. However, this is one of the must drive in Albania. In many parts, the landscape is outstanding. We had not enough time to visit each village, to take each road going towards the see, and I suppose that it will be the same for you, but you must know that you might spend several days (and even more) on this route.

The road clings to the mountain slope and is almost a single track. Fortunately, the traffic is very low, and one has seldom problems to cross another vehicle (especially if it is a bus!). I found that the most difficult part was across Dhërmi, a mountain village on the sea side, as the road is tight between the houses and that you cannot view in advance oncoming traffic. Be ready to some rear driving! Trailors are not advisable!

Many people have mentioned Butrint, but it really is an amazing place, not only the site itself but also the surrounding area. On the drive from Sarande you pass through countless olive groves, a large lake (called lake Butrinti I think??) where you can see the mussel farms from high up,. Butrint lies in a flat valley surrounded by daunting mountains. I don't know if it's just me but there was a bit of a jungle feel about the site, and did someone mention mosquitos?

Fier is a town of 120,000 inhabitants, in southwestern Albania, It is a modern town, not worth a visit, except for those interested in urbanism but 8 km west to Fier, the ancient Greek city of Appolonia, founded around 550 BC by Greek settlers from Corfu and Corinth is an interesting spot, not yet entirely dug out.

I have visited Butrint twice, in 1988 and in 2007.

Butrint, ancient Buthrotum, lies in south-west Albania, 20 km south of the modern port of Saranda. It is on a narrow peninsula lying between the strait of Corfu and the inland salt-water Lake Butrint.

Butrint was inscribed in 1992 on the List of World Heritage with the following description :
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Following a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each period (Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian periods) in the city's development.

Konispol is a backdoor entrance into Albania! At least this is what we felt when we drove from Igoumenitsa (Greece) to Sagiada, passed the border and further drove to Konispol Butrint and Saranda.

If you want to know how was that amazing journey, look at my backdoor entrance page, built under the name of the border village, Konispol.

  • Bistrice River to Blue Eye Spring - Albania
    Bistrice River to Blue Eye
    Spring
    by nmercury64
While in Sarande, Albania, make sure to take a trip out to see the Blue Eye Spring, known as 'Syrin e Kalter' to the Albanians.
In a beautifully wooded site, water wells silently out of a three metre wide, deep blue opening in the earth which is the main source of Albania's Bistrica River. Albanians say that it is nearly impossible to drown in the spring because the rapid water flow will always be pushing you towards the surface. Following the river in the picture east of Sarande leads to the Blue Eye Spring

  • Directions: The Blue Eye Spring (Syrin e Kalter) is located about 16 Km east of Sarande, Albania on the road that follows along the south side of the Bustrica River to its source.
