Durres has a very nice sandy beaches. We have the same kind of beaches here in Montenegro, at Ulcinj area. I disliked like the fact that most of the hotels, restaurants and other new buildings were raised right on the shore. Having in mind, that they did not sort out the sewage system, it makes the things even worse. I can only imagine what is going to happen in few years if the things stay this way.
Durres is the oldest city in Albania and one of the most important from economical point of view. There are some interesting places to be seen such as the Old city walls, The palace of King Zog , the new University…Durres is also the main touristic city very popular among the Albanians as well as among Italians and other foreigners.It really is must see when visiting Albania.
Passing the Shkoder we continued our drive towards Lezhe. The scenery was not changing at all. We drove by some more nice villages. The cute thing about the houses we left by the road was that most of them had lots of flowers in front. It gave the impressions that Albanians do care about the surroundings, although, some trash could be seen from time to time.
Driving further towards Durres, we saw some more villages, a small towns but mostly the agricultural land. It was spreading the both sides of the road. No wonder, as Albania is still mostly agricultural country. Every single peace of land is used, even the hills. However, the fields were empty, I guess it had something to do with a fact that it was Sunday.
Durres is interesting city. The mixture of new buildings (decent ones), the old buildings from Hohxa time and a new kitch buildings are everywhere. On my 3 pictures, you can see some examples. The tird one is hilarious..Troy cafe with a Troyan horse dominating..
Lezhe is colorful town situated at the north part of Albania. I say colorful, as the most of the buildings are painted in bright colours. I have noticed that there are a quite few new buildings as well. Anyhow, the townh looked much nicer than I have expected.
I must tell you that I liked villages much more than the towns of Albania. Although one can see some improvements, the towns had some real dirty and worn out areas. Shkoder is no different. Here on the picture you can see how the old part of the town looks like. No comment….
They are everywhere! Always the same shape but different sizes. Some of the biggest are turned into cafes but they have no idea what to do with small once.It is hard to imagine the real usage of such a things.
First I have to tell that the roads were not bad at all. We have passed a small villages which were nice most of the time. One thing that caught my eyes right a way were water tanks on almost every roof. Easy to conclude that Albania is suffering from water shortage.*
Not long after the border crossing you would see two cafes on each side of the road. I have checked both of them and I can tell you that I was pleasantly surprised especially with one on the right side. In fact it was pizzeria with a beautiful garden and small souvenir shop where I have bought a small something to remind me of Albania when I get back .
