Gjirokastra

by SallyM

The citadel at Gjirokastra is a Turkish fortress that was rebuilt by King Zog as a prison, and was also used for that purpose under the Communists. Outside on the terrace, there are views of the city and of the Drinos valley, also the wreck of a US Lockheed plane which, according to the communists, was forced down while on a spying mission in the 1950s. Inside, there is a gloomy vault, filled with large guns and made eerier by the cooing of a multitude of pigeons. The curator was slightly reluctant to show us the arms museum, stating that it was run-down and exhibits had been stolen. It certainly was not as new and fresh looking as the Skanderbeg Museum in Kruje. There were damp patches on the walls, and the oldest weapons had been stolen during the unrest in 1997. However the twentieth century exhibits were interesting, with weapons, statues, pictures and maps of campaigns. Some of the...

Skanderbeg Museum

by SallyM

The Skanderbeg museum in the hilltop town of Kruje is based on the life of the Albanian hero Skanderbeg. When we visited, it was a very new, well-laid out museum, but when we went upstairs, they turned all the lights off downstairs.

Historical sightseeing

by Rushi23

We went to Apollonia for the afternoon. This is the ruins of an ancient city from over 1000 years ago. It was founded in 588 BC by the Greeks. The city had a population of more than 50,000 by the 2nd century BC. An earthquake caused a river to run through the city which led to its decline in the 3rd Century. Apollonia is a beautiful, full of history, many artifacts which have been excavated. The site was 1st excavated in WW1 and then carried on through the 1920' and 30's. There is still archaeologists working on the site, a lot of the city is still buried under the hill it sits on.Lovely tour guide, spoke a little English, but my husband was their to translate, so it was easier for us to understand. Small kiosk outside to buy entry ticket, also guide books in most languages to purchse, very little money.

Uji ftohte- cold water

by AlbaniaLover

Meaning cold water this is the place to be on a hot day. Between Tepelene and Gjirokaster the water is running down from the mountains. You can either walk down to the river for a swim or walk up to the restaurant for a drink or something to eat in the shade of the tree's. Also you can collect fresh drinking water, you see plenty of people stopping to fill up bottles for a car journey. There are also little stalls along the road selling drinks being cooled by the water or a snack. Some people are selling fresh fish along the road as well.

Sunbathing in Ksamil

by AlbaniaLover

These are some of the best beaches i saw in albania. You can talk a boat ride over to the island where you can soak up the sun and swim. If you would rather stay on dry land the are some nice little local restaurants by the beach this side and a little club in the evening.

Syri i Kalter

by AlbaniaLover

I think that this is a national park area, you do have to pay to get in although it was not much. It has a very deep pool of very very cold water in the centre where you are meant to be able to see an eye in the middle....you can kind of see what they mean. Also there are rivers flowing around you and tree's shading the walk ways which is lovely on a hot day. Also there is a nice restaurant.

National Museum

by SallyM

This museum covers the history of Albania from the stone age to Zogist times. When we visited the rooms covering the Communist period were not open as they were "not historically accurate".The museum was interesting, but they did not seem very prepared for visitors. I was carrying my bag, and the woman at the ticket desk said that I would not be able to take it into the museum with me, but would have to leave it with her. I handed it over and asked whether I would get a receipt or tag. In fact, she locked it in a small cupboard at the bottom of the desk and gave me the key. Towards the end of the museum visit, she asked for the key back as some other visitors had arrived and she needed to lock their things away.
