folklore festivals and concerts

by greenCoral

Albanian traditional music is beautiful. I especially love the costumes from different regions of the country. Usually Tirana is the cultural center and there you will be more likely to have a chance to view one of these concerts. There is also a folk music festival that is done once a year. I think that takes place in Gjirokastra (or used to, I don't know for sure now that Albania is not communist anymore-Albania's dictator was from Gjirokastra). this is a picture from the "Dance of Swords" (valle e shpatave)-it's quite spectacular and is characteristic of the northern part of Albania.

Most historic and beautiful town to visit

by sourbugger

Gjirokaster : A few years back myself and a friend were some of the first non-Albanians to explore the country of Albania by mountain bike.I remember the short but steep climb into this lovely little town of Gjirokaster. There is always somethong a bit special about a town built on top of a hill, it always seems to add a sense of drama to the place. This was certainly true when we visited as a riot had nearly started outside the post office. Hundreds of people were slowly absorbing the fact that they had been totally swindled in the latest pyramid scheme to collapse. Unless it's changed now the only way to get accommodation is to stand around in the main square and start asking people - a surprising number have the odd spare room although granny will probably have to sleep elsewhere for the night.

KRUJA

by jordijoan

Kruja could be just one more forgettable albanese city if it wasn't because of his castle and bazaar. The castle, on top of the hill that domains the city contains a horrible modern building built by the dictator's relatigves to be converted as an archeological museum. And I say horrible as it tries to look like and old castle but built with modern materials and really out of placed when you see it. But anyways, down the castle there is the small ethnological museum, an old typical ottoman wooden house which has been decorated with antique objects and clothes to show you how life in ottoman high class was. And best of all, the visit is guided by an old man who speaks a very particular but easy to udnerstand english and who really knows how to make you be interested in everyhting that was taking part in the house, from how the made wine, oil or worked with leather to the typical wedding...

NATIONAL MUSEUM (TIRANA)

by jordijoan

Tirana's National Museum is one of the most interesting places to visit in Tirana. Placed in the heart of the city, in Skanderberg square it contains some of the best archeological and historic stuff about the country (even if this means that some archeological sites have seen how their best pieces were brought to Tirana) and a specially interesting permanent expo about the horrors of the communist dictatorship. The worst thing about the museum is that apart of some basic info in english, most of the writtings and information is written in Albanese only but anyways you have enough info to get an idea about the history of the country. The visit can take you about 90 minutes and costs about 2,5 euros per person.

APOLONIA RUINS AND MUSEUM

by jordijoan

Very difficult to locate (just about 8 kilometers out of Fier but you will find few signs leading to it) Apolonia ruins and specially the museum located int he monastery next to it has a nice entrance arch which has been partially rebuilt as well as part of the old small theather of the city. The rest of the site is being restored and now just offers some collumns and rests (or traces) of where the buildings and so were. The museum, apart of some fresh paintings from the medieval centuries (in not very good condition but still woth a visit) contains some human sculptures, vases, sarcophagus, etc... from the bizatin city of Apolonia (even if the best stuff is in the national museum in Tirana). There is no bus or whatever going to the ruins, and the road ends there, so taxi or a private driver are the only options to get there. From the old site a nice landscape with the typical bunkers can...

ARDENICA

by jordijoan

Ardenica is a small orthodox monastery , about 20 minutes from Fier (direction to Vlora). It survived to the communist attacks against religion and religious buildingh due to the historic heritage it contains in the form of paintings and nice wood artcraft. Youc an not take pictures inside the bulding of the monastery, even out of the church, but they are really strict on this (please dont take pics INSIDE the church as the flash woudl really damage the old paintings on the wall). The visit is very short but worth the trip.

the bunkers.

by cachaseiro

during the enver hoxha rule, there was build several thousands bunkers around albania.enver hoxha was sure that the west was planning an invasion of albania and spend large amounts of money building bunkers.they did serve one good purpose though.the young albanians often used them to have sex in.quite practical if you still live at home with your parents.today they stand as an odd remain of the communist era in albania.

Thumbs up - very fine roman ampitheatre

by sourbugger

The Roman ampitheatre in Durres is very impressive, and if it is still in the condition I found it in, then it is not very well cared for. Once you look around you can see that it was the equal of any provincial ampitheatre. One is perhaps reminded of the one set in North Africa on the "Gladiator" film. When I was here it cost nothing to get in as the caretaker just couldn't give a toss, but things may have changed by now.

by cachaseiro

skhoder is the main town of northern albania and a pretty interesting place with lots of streetlife and people who are not used to foreigners and therefor very curious.i have to admit it was a bit of a ramshackle place, but i still enjoed my 2 days there.

Tirana

by Skibbe

The capitol city is not one of Europe's most glamorous metropolises but it does have some pretty areas in which to eat and shop and still has a unique feel. Of all the cities I've been to, this is the one that I think will change the most if I go back in ten years as it becomes more European. Some of that will be good, some not.
