I was in Albania in 2008 and in Ulcinj, Montenegro in 2010 and think one of the best ways of getting around is by bus or FURGON (minibus) ..The buses tend to run according to a timetable
and the furgons simply when the vehicle is full. We found that most people travel before noon except in Tirane when the transport leaves a bit later as is the capital and a transport hub.
See the link below,,,very good info but
DO NOT BE SO FIXATED ON LEAVING TIMES,
but do be there in good time.
ALWAYS get on the furgon with the most people because that's the one that will leave first. There will more than likely be several drivers trying to get you to take their furgon but be warned, if choose one because it's pretty but turns out it's empty, you could end up waiting for 45 minutes while various others pull off. And then you'll be wishing that you didn't care so much about colors.
No furgon ride is complete without a soundtrack of traditional Albanian music blasting from the speakers
Furgons are amazing because I can literally go cross-country for €10 - can we get one from London to Edinburgh with these same prices???
I traveled from Tirane to Vlora by furgon and had this really old guy in a flat peaked cap talking 9 to the dozen and me with my total of 8 words in Albanian ...he got off about half way in Fier. I feel that I got to have a better conversation with this old man with my 4 days of Albanian than 12 years in Hungarian with strangers in Hungarian.
One can take the train from Belgrade/ skopje to Thess@loniki in Greece (12/5 hrs), then walk across the street from the station there and catch a direct bus to Abania, Alvavel is the major company's name, it may drop you some kms outside Sarande and then u catch a taxi.
BG-Thessa 12 hrs- 30+ euro, twice a day
Thessa- Saranda/Ghirokaster, daily (normaly evenings/nights), 34+ euro, 10 hrs.
I have taken the northern route via Crna Gora last summer and it is slow and much more tiring...
For all destinations south of Tirana the route via Greece is more convenient and not expensive.
Hello, I just traveled with some friends from Tirana to Dubrovnik round trip a few weeks ago. It took us around 7 hours since we had to stop at each border. X4 Albania,Montenegro; Montenegro,Croatia The roads from Tirana to Shkodra is new and wonderful. The road from the Albanian boarder through Montenegro was a little rougher than I expected, but not bad.
I did hear that we would need insurance in Montengro, but we were with a travel agency who worked it out all for us.
You will need to pay 10 Euro per person when entering Albania.
As for safety, I would not be concerned at all. We were all women and had no trouble at all. I enjoyed the trip so much I may take my entire family this May! Enjoy Albania!
The Shalom Travel Agency worked very hard to make sure we were comfortable and safe. The drivers were also very proffesional. I highly recommend them.
The trains in Albania are not very frequent.
They run very slowly.
There is a trainline between Durres and Tirana.
Perhabs there will be trains to Shkoder again.
The Albanian railway company has no homepage.
The timetbale is printed in the "Kursbuch Europa" from the German railway company.
Buses in Albania are cheap and a great way of meeting people, and you see much more of the countryside than you would squashed up, hurtling along in a furgon, but they tend to take a long time, at least for the moment, because of bad roads or road works (especially south of Tirana) to modernize them (the roads, that is). Road works continue even on Sundays. Buses also often stop on the way to pick people up or let them off, unlike furgons, which don’t start until they’re full, then only stop occasionally for snacks. The timetables at bus stations are fairly accurate, I found, and the buses are reasonably comfortable. It's best to get yourself a bottle of water – pronounced “oowi” – before you set off, like everyone else.
(There’s an amazing ship-shaped house just a bit inland from Vlore, which I’d never have seen if I’d been in a furgon. We stopped near there to drop an old couple off, I think, or to pick up some children – a few miles further on you go past a largish, rather posh-looking high school set back in a garden.)

We rented our car for 10 days by Eurocar it was cheapest option. We should get our car in Airport
in 9.00 AM when we came on 8.30 office was closed ,as offices another companies, and it was not weekend, but after we contact with head office in Tirana, in 30 minutes Eurocar executive brought us a car. On the last day we drop off car in Tirana without any problems.
There are different buses from Prishtina to Tirana during the day. There is one at 4pm every day and arrive at midnight at Tirana.
The pric is around 15-20 euros and from Tirana to Durres there are different minibuses or buses every hour from the train station of Tirana to Durres and it takes one hour and it costs 1-2 euro.
if you need something else, feel free to ask.
Ok so a lot of you emailed me about this company I rented - NOSHI Rent A Car because they obviously are very cheap and comparable to Western European car rental rates.
Just like so many of you, I also checked myself and Avis, Sixt, Hertz, and Europcar start at 60-70 Euro per day for their smallest cars. NOSHI Rent A Car starts at 19 Euro!
Their fleet and prices are:
Subcompact - Chevrolet Spark - From 19 Euro/Day
Compact - Chevrolet Kalos - From 24 Euro/Day
Midsize - Opel Corsa - From 29 Euro/Day
Intermediate - Opel Meriva - From 34 Euro/Day
Fullsize - Chevrolet Evanda - From 39 Euro/Day
Premium - Opel Vectra - From 44 Euro/Day
Minivan - Opel Zafira - From 54 Euro/Day
SUV 4x4 - Opel Antara - From 59 Euro/Day
Tour Van - Opel Movano - From 69 Euro/Day
NOSHI Rent A Car is in Downtown Tirana and they serve the Airport as well. For a pre-negotiated rate, they can even deliver the vehicle in other cities, and border crossings of Albania.
Service was excellent (the owners operated rent a cars in USA and Canada before starting in Albania) and their staff speaks English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Serbo-Croat, Russian, Turkish, and Greek. For long rentals you can definitely negotiate even better rates.

I did´t find (april 09) a bus from Shkodra to Montenegro, but i was able to hire a furgon (shared cab) with other people to Ulcinj/Montenegro (€ 7.50, car change at the border). The other way, maybe Blue Bus (Herzog Novi based) is having buses to that border( i did see one parked at there), otherwise in the center of Ulcinj is a cab stand, if you are not in a hurry you might find someone to share, but maybe in the summerseason are more possibilities.
Albania is one of the most beautiful places in the Balkans especially during the summer. We rented a 4x4 for about 60 Euro / Day from a place in downtown Tirana called NOSHI Rent A Car (that was the cheapest rate for a 4x4 by the way, average is around 100 euro / day) and went to all major cities in the Central and South Albania. The weather was magnificent and so was the drive. The roads were ok for one the poorest country in Europe, but very manageable on a 4x4. The Opel Antara suv we got was also excellent at off-road driving (in the beaches and mountains). Anyways we definitely recommend Albania as a fun and safe place. Being a foreigner definitely is a plus because the locals are extremely hospitable especially to Germans.
I met a taxi driver who speaks English and is allowed to enter the baggage area of the airport. This is a extra help as trying to find a driver after departing the baggage area can be a little daunting. Everyone comes up to you asking if you need a driver.
So, You can call the number and leave a text message with the name of the passenger, date of flight, time of flight (in 24 hour time to be sure of no mix-up), and the airline. They will go to the baggage area with a sign of the passengers name. Couldn't be easier!

From Podgorica to Shkoder is approximately 28 miles, the border lieing roughly halfway between the two cities. No scheduled transport of any kind operates across the border (Han I Hot) so the journey needs to be made by taxi. I got my hotel to order a taxi and was charged €20 for the trip to the border. Along the route my driver offered to take my all the way into Shkoder itself for an additional €40. I agreed as this was just a whole lot easier. At the border I did not note any Taxis waiting on either side though I would imagine it would not prove to difficult to order one. There is no longer a €10 entry and exit for entering Albania for EU citizens, I was charged a nominal €1 tax though. Once into Albania my dirver ensured I found my hotel before leaving me. He was a good guy, even had the legendry Caf del Mar playing in his car. Shkoder is not huge. From Montenegro you will come out to the roundabout with the statue, this is the true heart of the city. The road on the left if for Piazza park and continue to the end of the road and it will bring you to the train Station. The road on the right takes you past the football stadium.
Hello! I have just traveled from Tirana to Skopje. Using a buss is easy. Every day there are several buses from Tirana to Tetovo and vice versa. Buses from Tirana depart every evening at 9.00, from rail station of Tirana. It is situated only 1.2 Km in the north of central square of Tirana. Travel agencies are Drita and Pologu. The name of the bus is Polog. The ticket cost 15 euro one way, 25 two ways. At Tetovo the buss arrive at 5.00 next morning. It is not comfortable at all. You may found yourself in a buss full of farmers. Anyway. As I now, this is the only opportunity. From Tetovo is easy to go to Skopje. At buss station you can wait at maximum half hour for the buss to Skopje. It costs 100 denar, almost 1.5 euro.
For what I now, using a taxi is not an option. Tickets can be brought directly in the buss.
On Skopje, in the old Ottoman quarter, who can sleep on small hotels for 20 euro per night. You have to share the toilet with others in this case.
Having spent approximately 5 months in the Sheraton-Tirana, I know the "ins" and the "outs" of the...more
