    Schloss Esterhazy

Schloss Esterhazy is the most interesting place in Eisenstadt, it looks nice outside and mainly inside. The tours of the castle are made by nice and funny ladies with lot of humour, that is always a lot of fun.

    Visit the Winzerkirtag

Our trip to Eisenstadt coincided with the Winzerkirtag which is held every year in Kleinhoflein, which is a district of Eisenstadt.

Winzerkirtag is a wine festival and many local producers attend and set up their own heuriger. We had a table booked at the heuriger owned by Rudolf Kaiser (www.weingut-kaiser.at) and we had a very enjoyable evening.

    Weinmuseum

It was not exactly what I expected from a wine museum, but a nice walk through the old wine cellar of the castle. Some exhibits about wine history, nice to cool down on a hot summer day. And hey, wine is what the region is most famous for!
PS: Frequently, they have an unexplainable smell of fire and smoke in the wine shop where you get the tickets...

    Bergkirche

Some steps away from the castle on a light hill stands the Bergkirche. It shows also great frescos and many rich interiors.

And it is a must-see activity for all those people on VT who love the music of Joseph Haydn. He is buried under the north tower of the church in a honory grave. Originally Hadyn was buried in Vienna but Lord Paul Esterhazy founded the special grave in1932, when his birthday had its 200th anniversary.

Joseph Haydn was born in a small village called Rohrau, which is about 60 kilometers from Eisenstadt. For more information about his birthplace, please have a look on my Rohrau page!

    Schloss Esterházy - Haydnsaal

by MEdelmann Updated Aug 24, 2004

One of the most impressive rooms of the castle is the Haydnsaal (Haydn hall), which is richly decorated with frescos and hungarian heros. Joseph Haydn, the famous composer, performed many of his music pieces here. Joseph Haydn played an important role on the court of the Esterházys.

Today the hall is still used for concerts throughout the year. In September there is held a Haydn-Festival here. It is one of the best concert halls in Austria.

Unfortuneatly no pics may be taken inside the castle !

Schloss Esterházy / the palace of Lord Esterházy

by MEdelmann Updated Aug 24, 2004

The palace of the Esterházys is the dominating building of the town and Eisenstadts most important sight of corse. In medival times it was originally a castle with four corner towers and a inner court. Between is 1663 and 1672 it was reconstructed into baroque styles.

The castle can visited with guided tours only. I once participated with a tour and it is really worth to see it. If I remember correctly the tours are held each hours. There is an information centre and souvenir shop on the entrance of the castle.

This unique church is built in an artificial hill and has underground scenes of the Passion of Christ. In addition, you can visit the Haydn Mausoleum there.
