 | Forchtenstein Things To Do | Tips 11 - 19 of 19 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (19) In the museum called Ahnengallerie you can see lots of precious clocks, all of them made in a different way and each of them is a masterpiece of its time. Wrist-watches were not known in the 16th century, so it made sense to have a clock for each room and of course it was also a way to show someones prosperity. Some of these clocks are open in the backside and you can take a look inside for the mechanical part of these works of art, that was very interesting. Leave a Comment Directions: You will find these clocks in the Ahnengallerie in Hochburg Forchtenstein

Lots of old cannons are displayed in one of the arcades of Burg Forchtenstein, between the restaurant Burgschaenke and the Hochburg. You can see them any time of the day during the opening-times of the castle between 10.00 in the morning and 06.00 in the afternoon, free of charge and you can even touch them or take your photographs. Foreign troops never had a chance to take over the treasuries of the Esterhazy-family also by the help of these great cannons. Leave a Comment Directions: See these cannons on your way from the restaurant to the Hochburg of Forchtenstein.

The Waffenkammer is a part of the guided tour through Burg Forchtenstein and it shows plenty of rooms with the equippment of the whole private army of the Esterhazy-clan as well as weapons that were left back at the battlefiedls by enemies. This collection is one of the largest collections of medieval arms in Europe and a must for all enthousiasts of medieval weapons and iron armouries. Leave a Comment Directions: This part of the castle can be seen only during the guided tour through the castle.

The chapel of Burg Forchtenstein is a part of the castle that you are able to see only when taking the guided tour through the castle or in the tour to the Treasury / Schatzkammer. You will be able to enter the chapel only at an upper balcony and look down to the altar and you will be pretty close to the great decorations and stucco-work of the ornate ceiling of the chapel. The chapel is still used for wedding-ceremonies and you can rent it for such special occasions. Leave a Comment Directions: The chapel can be visited only, when participating in the guided tour through the castle or to the treasury/Schatzkammer.

There is a special collection of fine works of art made in an absulutely unbelievable precision from bones or even ivory : enlarge my photographs in order to see these great details, you will hardly ever see such works of art anywhere else in a museum. It is a miracle that they have survived so many centuries in the treasury vaults under the castle of Burg Forchtenstein. The entrance to these chambers was hidden under a carpet and under that carpet the floor could be lifted and still today this is the only way to enter these secret chambers. Leave a Comment

Silver-rooms were quite usual in any castle or palace of the 16th or 17th century, but most of them disappeared in other castles, because the silver used to be melted sooner or later for financial reasons and so this collection in Burg Forchtenstein is quite unique : Chandeliers, the frame of the mirror, clocks, furniure, everthing was made of solid silver. Leave a Comment Directions: The siverroom is part of the Ahnengallerie, you can walk through it on your own.

Burg Forchtenstein is full of "war-souvenirs" , things that had been left over at the battlefields, when the foreign troops had to flee the strong army of the Esterhazy-troops. The most unique such treasure is an ornate tent, that was left back by the turque-soldiers, who tried to invade Vienna and Austria. It used to be obviously something like the head-quarter of the turques, because it has very rich ornaments. There is a folding chair and a folding table as well, all of these exhibits dating back to the 17th century. Leave a Comment Directions: This tent is part of the "Ahnengallerie", that you can see on a self-conducted tour.

I cant help it I have to think of the "Gypsy baron" when I take a look at this funny clock. When you enlarge my photographs you will see the fine details and most of these small persons and animals on and around that clock will be moving at certain times, that is certainly a lot of fun, but unfortunately there are no performances given of that ! The Esterhazy-family had most of their land and castles in Hungary of today, so this clock also shows a certain "self-irony" , because this is the way Hungarian people are normally shown in satyrical paintings : a man, anything else than slim and with a thick moustache... Leave a Comment Directions: You will find this Gypsy-baron-clock in Ahnengallerie of Burg Forchtenstein
