The village is quite interesting as well, because there you can see plenty of great innercourts of the traditional farmhouses, they rather look like sidestreets, but it seems to be the hungarian influence in architecture that the farmhouses used to be built like this. All of Burgenland did belong to Hungary for many centuries and it was added to the Austrian empire in the 20th century. Leave a Comment

Breitenbrunn is a small village just a few km north of Rust. I was surprised to find an intersting tower there, it was built in the 13th century in order to watch out for enemies and has a great museum inside nowadys. In the museum you will see an early type of bear that was found in excarvations, some smaller teeth of a mamouth and some exhibits about the sandstone from Breitenbrunn that was used in order to build the cathedral of Vienna / Stephansdom The tower-museum is open for visitors : Tuesday till Sunday between 09.00 a.m. and 12.00 noon and again from 01.00pm. till 05.00p.m. In October they close already at 04.00p.m. the entrance-fee is 1,50 Euros per person Leave a Comment

St.Margarethen is just a few km from Rust and at the quarry there sandstone was taken to build houses already at roman times, most buildings of Ringstrasse in Vienna were also made from stones of this quarry. Nowaydays the quarry is used as one of the largest natural stages for annual festivals and theatre-performances. You can take a guided tour through the area and can see also plenty of great sculptures around of it. Leave a Comment

At a few places you can still see some remains of the medieval townwall of Rust, that still has a total length of 800 meters nowadays and a hight of 4 meters. The older parts date back to the year 1512, the newer ones were added in 1614 after an invasion by the turques who had destroyed plenty of buildings. On my first picture you see an old towngate, that you will find at the east-end of the townsquare and all the other pics are the remains of the townwall, that you can see close to the Fischerkirche. Another important part of the townwall starts at the Pulverturm. Leave a Comment

The Pulverturm dates back to the year 1614 and it was an important part of the medieval townwall. Pulverturm / powder-tower was the place where the explosives were stored and is is part of school for vinters nowadays. Next to the tower you can walk along a quite long part of the medieval townwall - see my 2nd picture. You will pass by that Pulverturm, when you drive down the Hauptstrasse in direction to Neusiedler See and turn left after the "Seehof" the street is called "Am Seekanal" there. You will find plenty of parking-spaces also in that area. Leave a Comment

The sundial was found by one of the locals who recognized what the engravings on the stone meant and restored it to its present state. It is located near the town museum and is near to a war memorial. Leave a Comment

The town is full of many historical buildings. This one is just outside the town centre. Leave a Comment

This impressive church is slightly out of the centre past the museum and town hall. It has a lovely fenced off garden in front and is often used for music concerts. Leave a Comment
