Rust Things to Do

  • Rusterhof & Mooslechners Buergerhaus

Mooslechners Buergerhaus is a building that dates back to the year 1540 and nowadays this scenic old house is a modern hotel and restaurant. They have just 11 suites, but all of them very special, take a look at their web-page below !Unfortunately I saw this house only from outside, this is why I did not put it as a restaurant- or hotel-tip.

  • Fischerkirche (Fishermen's Church)

This is the oldest church (Gothic style) of Rust on a small hill just above the Market square with a nice view over the centre.

  • The Storks

Rust is quite proud of its storks and indeed you can spot many nests on the roofs and just outside the centre is the "Storchenwiese", one of the favourite places of the storks to hunt for frogs and other food to feed their breed.

  • Seehof & Weinakademie

Seehof is the last building, when you walk along the mainroad of Rust towards the lake. Seehof was once the townhall of Rust and nowadays it is used for wedding-receptions and in the back of the innercourt you will see these beautiful arcades and a bit further back there is the "Wein-Akademie", a school for vinters.

  • Haydn-Keller

Haydn-Keller is a nice medieval building close to the catholic chuch, I mainly saw it from outside because I was attracted by its great and unique facade. I also tested it as a restaurant because they had "Rieslingsuppe" (a wine-soup) on their menu, but when I came back to have dinner there, they were closed already quite early in the evening. That...

  • Weingut Feiler-Artinger

Weingut Feiler-Artinger is in my opinion the most beautiful building in Rust, when it comes to interesting architecture : it rather looks like a renaissance-palazzo somewhere in Italy, than a vinters-house in Austria. So it is also no wonder, you will find this special house also in the TV-series "Winzerkoenig", but there it is called "Weingut...

  • RUST & the storks

Rust is famous for its storks and in summer 2007 there were around 63 storks to be found in the nests on top of the chimneys of almost every house in the small town of Rust. In early September most of the storks were flying to Africa in order to hibernate, only a few older ones who were not strong enough to fly such a giant distance had stayed in...

  • Weingut Landauer

The building of Weingut Landauer can be seen already from a big distance at the end of the townsquare : this lovely house dates back to the 13th century and was restored and partly rebuilt in baroque style in 1650.Nowadays it is used as the living-rooms for the family Stickler in the TV-series "Winzerkoenig"

  • Stadtbrunnen & Freistadt Rust

Stadtbrunnen is the well in the middle of the large town-square and in medieval times this was for most people the only place to get the water from for the daily living. It is out of function now, but when you take a closer look at it you will see an interesting sculpture on top : thge austrian double-eagle made of plenty of nails or something...

  • Auge Gottes - Haus

Auge Gottes - Haus is a really outstanding house, because it almost looks like a residential house of noble people, but in fact it was built by a wealthy vinter just for his employees. Auge Gottes means Eye of God, according to the relief on top of the house. Dont miss to take a closer look at the fine details at my 2nd, 4th and 5th pictures, all...

  • Stadtmuseum Rust : Kremayrhaus

The building of Stadtmuseum Kremayr was given as a donation to all citizens of Rust by a wealthy person named Kremayr some year ago including all the interior, precious furniture, clocks, chandeliers etc. and so a visit to this museum will let you see how the wealthy families used to live in that area. Unfortunately this museum is open for visitors...

  • Heuriger (Buschenschank)

"Ausg'steckt" is of course not the name of any Heuriger (or Buschenschank) but you should nevertheless in every wine town or village in Lower Austria, Burgenland or Styria and even some outskrits of Vienna look out for the big boards with this title. They list all the Heurige around which are open the actual day. You can identify the open ones also...

  • Don't Miss the Excellent Wines!

We went to this Vinotek/Restaurant because it was the only one opened on the evening we arrived in Rust. In fact, the place was so quiet, we thought it was not good. However, once we looked at their wine list and tried a few wines, we were impressed at the good quality wines served. The prices were reasonable for 1/8 portion, starting from Euro...

  • Try out this local place!

Nice, antique-looking but cosy restaurant in the cellar/basement of the Rathaus (Town Hall) in Rust. The service was fast and friendly. Austrian food was simple but good.I like the big fireplace in the middle of the room.

  • Traditional Austrian food

The Rathauskeller or City Hall Celler in Rust was once an old wine cellar and now turned into a restaurant. It is a cosy restaurant where you can enjoy good wine and traditional Austrian fare. Here find you in addition a large selection of Austrian quality wines, which is lovely and reasonably priced.

When in Austria during Autumn, you must not miss out on the wine tasting. It is much more affordable when you do outside Vienna, plus the quantity given is more generous. Rust Nightlife

    by mel_bee Written Aug 6, 2003

Out of season, you will find Rust is extremely quiet but when the weather is warm and there are tourists around, then there is alot to do in the evenings. Most bars have an evening programme with live music or a disco. I caught one of the free live music concerts near the Csarda restaurant before going home.

    Rust at night (after winetasting!!)

If you like to have a sweet tooth you will find something in the Elfenhof Schenke as well.
On this photo you can see "Somlauer Nockern" (Somloi galuska), a typical hungarian sweetness. It's not exactly like in Hungary but very delicious as well.
Besides you can see Palatschinken filled with jam.

Audrey, you would love it.... ;-)

Rust Off The Beaten Path

  • Rust: the Pulverturm

The Pulverturm dates back to the year 1614 and it was an important part of the medieval townwall. Pulverturm / powder-tower was the place where the explosives were stored and is is part of school for vinters nowadays. Next to the tower you can walk along a quite long part of the medieval townwall - see my 2nd picture. You will pass by that...

Lake Neusiedler See is often nicknamed "The Sea of the Viennese" - no wonder - apart from predictable weekend rush hours you can reach the lake from Vienna easily on a comfortable drive of one hour (about 50 km).
