Things to Do

The Storks

The Storks, Rust

lotharlerch Says:  Rust is quite proud of its storks and indeed you can spot many nests on the roofs and just outside the centre is the "Storchenwiese", one of the favourite places of the storks to hunt for frogs and other food to feed their breed.

Fischerkirche

Fischerkirche, Rust

coccinella169 Says:  Fischerkirche is a very old, nice looking church and the historically most interesting building in Rust. Parts of it date back to the 11th century. It is very small. As there are two further churches in Rust, they do not use Fischerkirche for masses anymore. Entrance fee is...

Go Wine Tasting

Go Wine Tasting, Rust

longsanborn Says:  Rust is famous for its excellent wines. There are several wine producers in the area (I believe they have the word "Weingut" in front of their names; I could be wrong!), and you should not miss trying out the wines in any heurigen or restaurant around Rust. Having a 1/8...

Go duck watching by the Neusiedler See (Lake)

Go duck watching by the Neusiedler See (Lake), Rust

longsanborn Says:  The area around the Neusiedler See is a wetland area for nature and wildlife. The shores were covered in tall reeds. You can walked around the shore (pavements were provided) and watch the ducks and ducklings swimming around or flying about. It is a peaceful way to spend the...

Rust Town

Rust Town, Rust

BorneoGrrl Says:  Walking around Rust town is interesting because not only you see the storks nesting on the rooftops, the building here are pretty and colourful. Take your time and walk around the main city hall square (Rathausplatz).

Neusiedler Lake

Neusiedler Lake, Rust

BorneoGrrl Says:  Rust has a nearby lake where you can easily walk to and enjoy the natural surroundings. The vast wetlands surrounding the lake are renowned for the richness and variety of its birdlife, for the simple reason that the reeds create huge areas of inaccessible animal habitat. In...

In the Seebad

In the Seebad, Rust

socrates_07 Says:  When you arrive at the lake you also have the chance to take a sunbath. On this photo you see the beach during the week, there were not too many people. But if you think you will find this place in this conditon at the weekend ( at daytime) you are completely wrong. (well, of...

Just look for anyone open: Heuriger (Buschenschank)

Just look for anyone open: Heuriger (Buschenschank), Rust

lotharlerch Says:  "Ausg'steckt" is of course not the name of any Heuriger (or Buschenschank) but you should nevertheless in every wine town or village in Lower Austria, Burgenland or Styria and even some outskrits of Vienna look out for the big boards with this title. They list all the...

Elfenhof Schenke Vinotek: Don't Miss the Excellent Wines!

Elfenhof Schenke Vinotek: Don't Miss the Excellent Wines!, Rust

longsanborn Says:  We went to this Vinotek/Restaurant because it was the only one opened on the evening we arrived in Rust. In fact, the place was so quiet, we thought it was not good. However, once we looked at their wine list and tried a few wines, we were impressed at the good quality wines...

Rathauskeller Restaurant: Try out this local place!

Rathauskeller Restaurant: Try out this local place!, Rust

longsanborn Says:  Nice, antique-looking but cosy restaurant in the cellar/basement of the Rathaus (Town Hall) in Rust. The service was fast and friendly. Austrian food was simple but good.I like the big fireplace in the middle of the room.

Rathauskeller Restaurant: Traditional Austrian food

Rathauskeller Restaurant: Traditional Austrian food, Rust

BorneoGrrl Says:  The Rathauskeller or City Hall Celler in Rust was once an old wine cellar and now turned into a restaurant. It is a cosy restaurant where you can enjoy good wine and traditional Austrian fare. Here find you in addition a large selection of Austrian quality wines, which is...

Elfenhof Schenke: Wine Tasting at the Vinotek

Elfenhof Schenke: Wine Tasting at the Vinotek, Rust

BorneoGrrl Says:  When in Austria during Autumn, you must not miss out on the wine tasting. It is much more affordable when you do outside Vienna, plus the quantity given is more generous. Elfenhof Schenke is a lovely heurigen-restaurant which serves their own brand of wine. During this...

Rust at night (after winetasting!!)

Out of season, you will find Rust is extremely quiet but when the weather is warm and there are tourists around, then there is alot to do in the evenings. Most bars have an evening programme with live music or a disco. I caught one of the free live music concerts near the Csarda restaurant before going home.

If you like to have a sweet tooth you will find something in the Elfenhof Schenke as well.
On this photo you can see "Somlauer Nockern" (Somloi galuska), a typical hungarian sweetness. It's not exactly like in Hungary but very delicious as well.
Besides you can see Palatschinken filled with jam.

Audrey, you would love it.... ;-)

Water Sports and Cycling, Rust

lotharlerch Says:  Lake Neusiedler See is often nicknamed "The Sea of the Viennese" - no wonder - apart from predictable weekend rush hours you can reach the lake from Vienna easily on a comfortable drive of one hour (about 50 km). And the lake with a water surface of about 320 km2, about a...
