  • From Vienna and Eisenstadt by bus

    Rust Transportation

Bus 566 goes from Vienna Südtirolerplatz to Rust Postamt‎, frequently about 2 hours. Bus 665 goes from Eisenstadt Domplatz, € 3,60 frequently about 20 to 35 minutes (some buses make big detours)

  • Heuriger (Buschenschank)

    Rust Restaurants

"Ausg'steckt" is of course not the name of any Heuriger (or Buschenschank) but you should nevertheless in every wine town or village in Lower Austria, Burgenland or Styria and even some outskrits of Vienna look out for the big boards with this title. They list all the Heurige around which are open the actual day. You can identify the open ones also...

  • food was good - flies are atrocious

    Parndorf Restaurants

I recently visited the Parndorf outlet shopping center and ate at the main cafeteria style food court. All the food we purchased that day was fresh and tasty. However, the entire eating area was inundated with large flies (the type usually found in barns). They literally swarmed the tables and patrons. We had to eat in such a hurry to avoid them...

  • Worth a trip to make savings

    Parndorf Shopping

McArthur Glen is an outlet with some 120 odd shops - mainly fashion outlets, but there are also several other shops. It sells a lot of last season's clothes - i.e. perfectly wearable but without the full price tag. Unless you come by car, you'll of course be restricted to buying what you can carry - it is a bit of a trek to the train...

Neusiedl am See Things to Do

In 1985 there was a big scandal around Austrian wine: Some wine farmers added antifreeze to their products, which was of course forbidden. At least nobody got poisoned :). Consequently, reputation of Austrian wine was not the best one for over a decade :). Since then Austrian vine production is more efficiently controlled, so that nowadays some...

  • Trains from Vienna

    Neusiedl am See Transportation

Trains from Vienna leave from the Südbahnhof, and take approximately 40 minutes to cover the 53km. At weekends it is worth checking the time of the last train in advance - often the last direct train to Vienna leaves around 9:30pm - and after that you might have to try to get a bus to Parndorf and a regional train from there. You can take bikes on...

  • Getting to Lutzmannsburg

    Lutzmannsburg Transportation

Drive to Lutzmannsburg. In your own car. There, I said it. My route TO Lutzmannsburg involved EIGHT changes of buses and trains, while my route back was easier, with only four. Unfortunately Lutzmannsburg is not easily accessible by public transit, but for those who don't mind a few changes it's definitely possible to get there from Vienna in a...

  • Cycle "Baby on Tour Route #3"

    Lutzmannsburg Things to Do

Lutzmannsburg has a number of beautiful walking and cycling trails through the nearby vineyards, and one afternoon I went out on a hotel bike to check out "Baby on Tour Route #3". This route is about eight kilometers, and like the others it is sponsored by Nivea (thanks for the clear signage, Nivea!). You'll start out by cycling towards the...

Sankt Margarethen im Burgenland

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You sit inside an open quarry, the stage is built into the walls of the quarry and integrates the rocks, lots of people on a huge stage, the getting darker while the lights get so different, horses come on stage or go off the stage in full gallop, even elephants were on stage! The orchester is great, wonderful singers - Opera in a very different place with really a different feeling. Since 1996 the festival exists and every 5 years they have instead of the Opera they have a Passion play, where the next will be 2006.

  • Landsee Castle

    Oberpullendorf Off The Beaten Path

Landsee was once the largest fortress in Burgenland, but was destroyed by fire in 1772 and is now largely ruined. There remains a massive keep, surrounded by four rings of walls and a number of buildings, largely now just in outline. The setting is the main attraction, perched above the village with extensive views of the surrounding...

  • In the Heuriger

    Oberpullendorf Local Customs

One custom we always enjoy and are keen to support is that of sampling the local wine :) One of the best places to do this is a Heuriger. These usually simple establishments are run by local winemakers as a “shop-window” for their wines. Food is available but only as an accompaniment to the main point of your visit which is to sample the wines....

  • Modern art

    Oberpullendorf Off The Beaten Path

I love to see old buildings put to modern use in a stylish and sympathetic way, and this gallery in an old mill in nearby Deutschkreutz is a great example. Outside you can see the original water wheel that powered the mill, and inside the rough stone walls are another reminder of the building’s origins and also make an excellent background for the...
