This "Queen of the Alpine Roads" between Heiligenblut (Kaernten) and Fusch (Salzburg) offers fantastic views in the area of Austria's highest mountain Grossglockner in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The road is very easy to drive (only the side road to Edelweissspitze is rather narrow) and can be done by drivers normally not used to Alpine roads. On many parts it has even three lanes, two up and one down, but you may expect a traffic density almost comparable to an Autobahn in the middle of the day in good weather. Therefore it is a good idea to plan an overnight stay along the Glocknerstrasse to fully enjoy the very low traffic in the morning and the later afternoon. The middle of the day is best spent on a nice hike in the area. The most popular one is the Gamsgrubenweg. Leave a Comment

A surprisingly short drive (much of it on Autobahn) is between Austria's highest mountain and warmest lake. In normal Summers you may expect water temperatures of 25 degrees even in late September. It is a very small lake among the many attractive and also warm lakes in the Sout of Kärnten, like for example the Wörther See or the Ossiacher See. Faaker See is quite close to Villach, the second largest city in Carinthia. Of course a lake as this one is perfectly economically exploited all around its beaches Leave a Comment

Gerlitzen, is the main skiing resort in the Villach area. It offers wide, well groomed slopes, mostly blue and reds. But even the reds skiruns aren't so hard. The Ossaicher See is a privately run family hotel (in the Familien Hotel chain) called Hotel Sonnenblick. Here they will teach children as young as 18 months old how to ski for two hours per day, the only known ski school in Austria which will teach any child under 3 years old. Annenheim is a pretty lake-side village close to Villach and linked by a quad chair to the Gerlitzen ski area above. The three country lift pass covers neighbouring resorts in Italy and Slovenia. Ski trail plans are available to orientate easy on them; the trails are clearly marked on the plan, as well as on the ski resort trail panels. On the other hand, it is pretty easy to orientate due to the simple configuration and not excessive trail length. by Manara There is a point where the borders of three countries, Austria, Italy and Slovenia, meet. It is easy to reach, just a few kilometres south of Villach. You cannot see much of Italy from there, but the view on the Slovenian side is spectacular, especially because in this part of the Alps the mountains on the Slovenian side are the most impressive. by Manara This is a spectacular gorge created by the Raggabach. It can be visited thanks to a system of catwalks, about 800 metres long (half a mile). The route is uphill, and when you get to the top of the gorge the way back is a path in the wood. It is open in Summer (end of May to October) from 9 to 18 every day. Hiking shoes recommended. by Manara This park (a wood on the mountain where the Castle Rosegg is located) is the home to animals of 350 species. Many of them are typical alpine fauna, such as the ibex, but many are more exotic, so you can see deers from India together with European deers. I was fascinated by the white wolves, but even more by the eye-to-eye meeting with a European lynx. by Manara This small old steam train operates only in Summer, between Ferlach and Weizelsdorf. It is funny, and the trip can be combined to a visit to the "Historama" museum of transports in Ferlach. The route is in a charming out-of-the-way area and it is nice to see people getting to the doors and windows of their homes to see the train and wave to the passengers. Luckily it does not run so frequently as to become annoying! Leave a Comment
