Spital an der Drau

by globetrott

Spital an der DrauMake a stop there, while driving from Villach to Gmünd, its an interesting small town with a great palace and some lovely baroque houses. The main attraction of Spital an der Drau and a good reason to leave the highway A10/Tauernautobahn is Schloss Porcia, the former palace that is used nowadays mainly for theatre-productions.The palace dates back to the year 1524 and is worth seeing inside as well, but unfortunately I was there late in the evening and was able to take just a few photos of the outside of the palace.

Kaerntner Freilichtmuseum - 7km from Klagenfurt

by globetrott

Kaerntner Freilichtmuseum a great openair museum of old farmhouses galoreThis excellent museum is in the tiny village of Maria Saal, just 7km north of Klagenfurt, and it might be a great halfdaytrip for the whole family: A lot of wooden houses from all parts of the county were rebuilt there again and you get the feeling to walk through a genuine village of the 17th or 18th century. There is a small chapel there, lots of farmhouses, some mills and a grocery-shop and in most of the buildings you can also step inside and take a look at the interesting furniture of the ancient times ! There is a traditional country-inn as well there inside one of the ancient buildings !--------------------------------------------This museum is open for visitors:daily except mondays from May 1st till October 17th between 10.00am and 06.00pmlast entrance is possible at 05.00pm !the entrancefee is 6...

St.Veit an der Glan

by globetrott

St.Veit an der Glan is an interesting town in the north of Villach and Klagenfurt and it has a great baroque townsquare with an interesting townhall (see it in my main picture and in my 3rd photo). You will see also a big part of the medieval townwall there still and for all fans of modern austrian art, there is also a hotel designed by Professor Ernst Fuchs, read more about it in my hoteltips and see it in my last photo here!A visit to St. Veit can be easily combined with a daytrip including Burg Hochosterwitz and Maria Saal. St. Veit is about 15 km north of Klagenfurt !

Burg Hochosterwitz

by globetrott

Hochosterwitz: Austria's most scenic castleJust imagine a freely standing hill, that is covered all over by a castle and the only way to get into the castle is to walk up a steep path going uphill like a spiral through several gates and fortifications. Burg Hochosterwitz is owned by the same family since 1570 and their name is "von Kevenhueller".There used to be a castle at this place already in the year 860, but the castle that you see there nowadays dates back to the year 1570, when the Landeshauptmann ( similar to the president of a county) Georg Freiherr von Khevenhueller bought the castle and had it rebuilt step by step. Hochosterwitz castle was ment as a place to flee to for the whole family, who owned several castles. Hochosterwitz was special, because there was just a small path around the mountain and that path, leading you smoothly uphill was fortified by 14 seperate gates,...

Villach : Burg Landskron

by globetrott

Villach : Burg Landskronis a castle high above a hill in the north-east of Villach and first you have to pay a toll for the steep private road to the castle. The parking on top is free of charge and the visit of the castle as well. Its mainly a restaurant with various restaurant-gardens with an excellent view and large halls for incentives and private festivities. You can attend eagles-shows there, where eagles are flying free close to the audience, its a pity that I missed it, they have 3 such shows in summertime and thats the only thing you have to pay extra !Greifvogelshow in Landskron-castle : eagles are flying free in the arena of the castle several times a day ! I missed the eagles-show in a large "arena" on top of Burg Landskron. I saw a similar performance in Werfen castle close to Salzburg some time ago and enjoyed it a lot ! Here in Landskron they have 3 performances every day...
