What a setting this bright yellow stunning building was in! This building was once Schloss Velden, and now is an upmarket Hotel located beside the beautiful Lake Worthersee. The Schloss was originally owned and built by a local count in 1590, however, little of the original building is left, as in 1762 the Castle suffered fire damage. It was...more
Lake Worthersee is an Alpine Lake that incredibly reaches 25 - 27° in summer. You can go swimming, diving, parasailing, water-skiing, kyaking, canoeing and sailing. There's a banana-boat which operates in the summer months and we saw that in action with the occupants falling off more than once! For smaller children, I saw paddle-boats in the shape...more
Just a pretty drive of 9 kms from Velden, we came across the small Village of Kostenberg.A smallish walled Church with a big frescoe made us stop and have a look. Once again, the door was locked, so I walked around the outside viewing the other frescoes and the old doors, plus the far reaching views over the pretty countryside. There even was a...more
If you want a scenic drive from Velden one day, then I recommend the Goldeck-Panoramastrasse mountain road, a 14.5km long road that begins at Zlan and finishes at "Seetal" car park at 1,895m altitude. Be prepared for the 10 hairpin bends!Scenery is magnificent and there were carparks located along the way.We could see the Millstatt Alps and Lake...more
A boat trip on Lake Worthersee sounded like a great idea, and it was included in our "Karten card" for FREE.The boat tour begins in Velden, BUT, you don't have to catch it here, as it makes stops all along at different lakeside towns where you can get off and on. The boat took us along the northern shore over Portschach to Pritschitz, then followed...more
VELDEN is located alongside Lake Worthersee which is a huge Lake. A little big?....Want something a bit quieter? ........Then if you have a Car, head along L95 [Keutschacher Strasse] for a pretty drive, and some beautiful pristine Lakes. Peace and quiet at these lakes, except perhaps for a couple of fishermen rigging up to head into the lake in...more
I just had to take a photo of the sign "Frog," a small town by Rosegg. What I didn't know, was Frog is probably quite well known, as the Celtic attraction "Keltenwelt" is located here.We were on our way to another attraction, so couldn't go in for a look, as it read you need approx 2 hours to enjoy the Open Air Museum on the Celts. I had a look at...more
As we drove along the lakeside in this area, we noticed a large number of what I call Mansions.Beautiful big homes with distinct architecture, and if you could see the gardens, [some hidden behind walls] these were lovely and added to the beauty of these homes.Lake-front and more nice lawn and gardens, paths for walking, and seats to enjoy the...more
The Velden Tourist Information Centre is located in a newish building on the main road, and has off street parking. The staff were very helpful and friendly, finding us excellent accommodation in Velden. They helped us with information, and it was here we bought the Karten Card.Well worth a stop before going any further!more
Coming back from Vienna, I stopped in Velden to say hi to a couple of my parents' friends who were spending some days there. I was impressed by the beuty of the town of Velden and of its lake. Of course a beautiful sunny day helped, but I really liked the town and I'd love to spend a weekend there in the near future.Velden is very close to the...more
Worther See is known to be the warmest lake in Austria. Hence you can go swimming in the lake practically any time of the year (except Winter off course!). The lake is very popular with the Austrians and the place is full of them during the Summer months. Hence, if you want to spend a weekend in Velden and go swimming in the lake, perhaps, Spring...more
A very tight passage of the river Loibl, which flows from Slovinia to Austria. A walk with several climbs, with specially made stairs and paths. Special parkingplace and a bus takes you back after your walk.Entrance with Kaernten card for free, otherwise you pay 6 euro. The walk takes you about two hours.more

The bahnhof (station), is situated slightly uphill from the town center. SO going into town is no problem, but the walk back again can be a little tiring if you have luggage and/or in hot weather. There is a limited number of lockers, and there are a small number of taxis outside the station.more
In the evening our Austrian hosts like to dress in the traditional way of the land. Looks nice, special the women. As a souvenir you are able to buy those dresses in special shops.
The real thing I mean! Real climbers know what to do and what the risc's are. Follow instructions on the signs. Never walk over bad paths unprepared and use good shoeworks.
The Alps are heavy mountains. Often people do not understand the dangers of them and fall into fatal accidents. So beware.....
Furthermore: Austria is a very civilized country. With normal caution there are no special dangers at all.
In all the years I went there, I have never been trapped at all! Are we that causious I ask myself? I don't think so. I simply never met someone or something that trapped me part from the wheather!
Unique Suggestions: Beware of the wheather, specially when you are on the mountains.
At the lake, there are many places you can do waterskiing, para sailing, wind sailing and so on.
Equipment: You can hire your gear locally
Before I buy any Tourist card, I do my homework, you must too!
I look at the cost, and what I want to see and how much that will cost, if I come out infront, then I buy the Card.
