The train ride from Salzburg to Villach is very beautiful and scenic. Here I am admiring one of the many beautiful valleys that can be seen from this train ride.

When you arrive at Villach Hauptbahnhof, the central station, getting situated is very easy. It is a train station with about 10 platforms and is a close distance to the central area of Villach.

If you have a Euro pass that allows you to travel about from Austria and Italy, the most cost effective travel is from Salzburg to Villach. Because other routes from Salzburg go into Germany, you will find that you will have to pay for the portion of the trip if you cross into Rosenheim station which is just next to Salzburg.

But if you want to get to somewhere like Rome or Venice or Florence within a reasonable time from Salzburg, you will have to leave at 7am to arrive at Villach by 9:45AM. From 9:45AM, you will take a 10:35AM train to Venice Mestre, and from there to whereever in Italy you want to visit.

Depending on where you'll be coming from, you can reach ski jumping hills by following these signs:
~ Exit Villach West/Ossiach/Faak am See --> direction Zentrum --> follow signs to Alpen Arena
~ Exit Warmbad --> direction Zentrum --> follow signs to Innenstadt and then to Alpen Arena

There is local bus line No.9 that goes from Hauptbahnhof (main railway station) to Bergsiedlung (in Möltschach). Click on the picture to enlarge local transportation map.

car: From a European viewpoint Villach is located where two important international connecting routes meet. On the one hand the route to the northern Adria coast and the upper Italian industrial area and on the other hand the route to south-east Europe. The excellent motorway network makes getting from one point to another easy and fast (Klagenfurt-Graz-Vienna; Salzburg-Munich; Udine-Triest/Mestre-Mailand; Laibach-Zagreb).

train: Direct connections to Graz, Vienna, Innsbruck, Italy and
    Slovenia.

    airplane: Klagenfurt 40km
    Salzburg 180km
    Laibach 120km
in town it is the best way to walk - the city of Villach isn't very big.
