I may be wrong, but it seemed to me that, probably due to the "imperial glory" reminiscences of past closeness to Vienna, Baden is the only small city in the area with its own tramway line to/from Vienna.
The tramway is a good way to reach Baden and the trip takes around 1 hour. Using the trains - if you take the ones which will not make stops at all stations in the way - the trip may take only 20 minutes.

Getting to Baden from Vienna by train can make you feel spoilt for choice - there are several ways of doing it, all dependent on where you are leaving from in Vienna. Firstly, and most of all quickest, there is the Regionalzug which goes from among other places Südtiroler Platz and which takes around 24 minutes for the journey - only stopping in a few stations along the way - a route predominantly serviced by double decker Wiesel trains.
Then there is the S1 - on the "Schnellbahn", which stops more frequently and the journey takes just under 40 minutes, so might be a slight misnomer. Alternatively, and possibly more scenically, although far slower, there is the Badner Bahn, a private railway, which runs between Karlsplatz/Oper and Baden city centre. This is like a normal tram service and the trip takes an hour.
If you are travelling from Vienna to Baden with a Viennese transport pass, then you can travel as far as Liesing on that ticket and buy your ticket from Liesing (even if the train is not stopping there) to get you to Baden for an extra EUR 1.70.

If you are in possession of a car: Baden is about 20km south of Vienna. Just take highway A2/Südautobahn and leave the highway at the exit Baden.
By train: "The Badner Bahn" leaves to Baden opposite the Vienna Opera. It takes about 1 hour to arrive in Baden centre. Alternatively there are trains departing from Vienna`s biggest train station "Südbahnhof" as well. These faster trains arrive in Baden in about 25 minutes. The disadvantage of this option is that you have to take a taxi or another bus from Baden train station to arrive in the centre.
By bus: there is a bus (direction Bad Vöslau) from the Opera house in Vienna to Baden as well. It takes about 40 min to arrive in the centre of Baden.

The casino bus service runs at regular intervals (usually 1 per hour) from Vienna to Baden until 3:20am. The last bus back leaves from the bus stop by the casino in Baden at 2:20am and takes 45 minutes into the centre of Vienna. It departs from opposite the Opera House in Vienna and a single trip to Baden costs EUR 5.70. This is not bad - given that you have to get a taxi from the station to the casino if arriving by train. The service is operated by the Wiener Lokalbahnen (operators of the Badener Bahn).
