In the historical city parks of Baden, the rose garden (Doblhoffpark) and the spa gardens (Kurpark), all kinds of festivities take place. In June there is a Rose Blossom Festival in the Rosarium and in the summer months concerts in the spa gardens and an operetta festival in the Sommer Arena. The Strauss family was in many ways connected with Baden. In the Kurpark is a monument dedicated to the elder Johann Strauss (1804-1849) and his musical partner Josef Lanner (1801-1843), as they were frequent performers in the gardens, and the setting of 'The Bat' (Die Fledermaus), written by Johann Strauss the younger (1825-1899), takes place in a spa town south of Vienna!
Baden bei Wien is situated in the heart of a wine-growing region. The white wines of Austria are generally crisp and refreshing and the reds fruity and inviting. Also produced are sweet dessert wines (mostly Riesling from a late harvest) and dry sparkling wines (sekt). The best white-wine grapes grown in this area are Neuburger, Grüner Veltliner and Rheinriesling, and the red Blauer Portugieser and Zweigelt grapes. In the vaults of the Heiligenkreuzer Hof at the Green Market (Grüner Markt) is a winegrower's tavern where the different wines that grow around Baden can be tasted and bought.
