Baden Things to Do

  • FLOWERS ARE EVERYWHERE IN BADEN!

Baden is known for its Rosarium, built in the 1960s. In the Rosarium in Doblhoff park, 20,000 roses / 600 different kinds bloom twice a year, what a picture that would be, and who would need perfume, the scent from the roses would be heaven! The best time is in June to October to see them at their best. There are other gardens around Baden, and many...

  • BADEN BIEDERMEIER STYLE

Baden Bei Wien is known for its Classical or Biedermeier-style villas and famous buildings of the rich and famous. I didn't know this style, so when I came here and looked around, I was quite impressed of what I saw. The Biedermeier period is really is a set of trends of that time. This came about because of a new urban middle class emerging and...

  • GRAND CASINO @ BADEN

As I''m not a gambler, going inside the Casino didn't interest me, I was quite content just viewing this magnificent building from the outside. The Casino was opened in 1934, was in operation but had to close during the war years, then re-opened again. It was originally in the Kurhaus, but moved in 1968 to the Kongresshaus. It has been renovated...

  • THE STADT THEATRE

The Stadtheatre or Summer Theatre, was another impressive building located next to the Kurpark. Built in 1906, it replaced a wooden former theatre from 1841. When I looked at the size of this Theatre, I found it nearly unbelievable that this huge Theatre was completely built in 4months.It has a movable glass roof, so can be used as an open-air...

  • THE UNDINE FOUNTAIN

The Undine Fountain was a beautiful Art Nouveau fountain I found in the Kurpark. The fountain was built by Josef Kassin in 1903 to mark the ending of the city's water pipe line. I found it an interesting fountain, made up of human, animal and mythological creatures. There was water in the basin, but the fountain itself was not working, a shame, as I...

  • THE KURPARK [SPA PARK]

As I love gardening, the Kurpark was one area I didn't want to miss. I really enjoyed walking this park that was created in 1792 to honour the empress Maria TheresiaIt's a large thermal park that stretches to the Wienerwald. There weren't any Bands playing the day we were there, although I read often bandstand concerts are held during an...

  • THE HERZOGHOF

This small Chapel - Antoniuskapelle, I found on my walk. I didn't know how to get in, so just took a photo from the outside. It was In 1704 that Countess Katharina von Lamberg decided to build this chapel in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. She had the arms of Lamberg (white lamb on a mountain) and a sundial added to the building. Even though the...

  • THE FRANZENBAD (HAMAM)

The Franzenbad which still has this name on the building, is now used as a Hamam. Before becoming a Hamam, Franz's spring was discovered here in 1802, and so, in 1827, a Bathhouse was built with a lantern bearing dome in it. Two Councillers of the Lower Austrian welfare system, were devoted to helping unhealthy people, so the Bathhouse opened free...

  • THE FRAUENBAD

In the Josefplatz, I found the Frauenbad, built in classicistic style with an impressive portico. I thought it one of the most impressive buildings here. This building used to be the women's Bathhouse, but now-days is the Arnulf Rainer Museum. Arnulf Rainer was born in Baden in 1929 and went to Vienna to study art, something he failed at. For some...

  • THE HAUPTPLATZ

The Hauptplatz is the main square in the heart of a large pedestrian area. It still mainly looks as it was back in 1812, when it was rebuilt after a major fire. This is where I found the Rathaus, built in 1815. The Plague Pillar or Trinity column was in the centre of the square. It was sculptured in 1713, by Austrian sculptor, "Johann Stanetti,"...

  • THE JOSEFPLATZ

The Josefplatz was the first square I came to in Baden. The square is known as Josefplatz and this is where the Frauenbad is and a lovely garden. From the garden I overlooked Josefplatz road, which entered and attractive roundabout complete with garden and flags, before carrying on as the Pergerstrasse. The square and this area is surrounded by...

We only had a couple of beers here as we were meeting Ursula in Vienna for dinner. It is in a pretty seting just of the main street through an arch shaped entrance. We sat in the beer garden and the smell of the pizza from the inside and the BBQ outside was enough to make us want to stay. A relaxed atmosphere and on a warm day it was just the kind of place we needed to rest our feet and prepare for the Vienna traffic!

Relax with a beer (and a BBQ?)

Here we were in Baden hoping to go to the Trots, trouble was, I was one day out!

This Trotting course (Trabrennverein Baden), dates back to 1892, when Vienesse socialites and Emperors came here for entertainment, the spas, Trotting and Racing events. The Baden Trotting Club is one of the oldest and largest trotting clubs in Austria, and also one of the most attractive. Courses like this one where your able to get close to the action are great!
Race highlights are the "International Baden mile", "Bascot of Baden", "Palio of Baden", the "Grand Prize of the city of Baden" and others.

The club begins racing in June and ends the end of October. The website has all the information.
