by globetrott Melk is just a small town of 6000 inhabitants - but it is well known for it's famous monestary... . and it is easily to be reached by car - just go on the highway A1 , take the exit at Melk and follow the signs for "STIFT MELK" . or you take the train - the trainstation is just opposite the monestary, maybe 800 meters to go . or arrive by ship, during a Danube-cruise . Industrieviertel ( quarter of industry ) is the eastern part of Niederösterreich, south of the Danube. (roughly south of Vienna ) The landscape has smooth hills in the west and is partly rather flat in the east, and as it is so close to Vienna, plenty of small factories were built there, that gave the name...
Most important places in Industrieviertel : BADEN - great buildings & home of my brother Leo (Globerover) GÖTTLESBRUNN - home of Manfred (MEdelmann) - simply have a look at his pages ! other places of interest : Semmering - great skiing area & famous mountain railway Carnuntum / Petronell - Roman remains Gumpoldskirchen Mödling Mayerling Leave a Comment

Mostviertel is east of Steyr and south of the Danube until about the city of Tulln. Mostviertel is a landscape with smooth hills and lots of apple- and pear-trees , that will be used to make a sort of apple- and pear-wine (=Most) or spirits, Schnaps & Obstler
Places of interest in Mostviertel, to be found on my pages are : MELK - baroque monastery AGGSTEIN - castle ruin Schönbühl - castle & monastery more places of interest : Seitenstetten with a great monastery Stift Göttweig - a great monastery Zwentendorf - an atomic power plant of a typical Austrian Style : First it was built , AFTERWARDS the population was asked, wether it should be used as well... AUSTRIA SAID NOOOOOOO !!! ;-)) 1.000.000.000 €uro invested for nothing ;-(( Leave a Comment

Weinviertel is north of the Danube and east of Mannhartsberg ( it is roughly the area north of Vienna ) The landscape has plenty of vinyards ( that is where the name came from ) and it is much more flat than Waldviertel.
Some nice villages, BUT certainly no real sights, except maybe Burg Kreuzenstein (close to Stockerau) Laa an der Thaya Eggenburg Hollabrunn and a really beautiful exception : RETZ - ( MEdelmann has great pics about this lovely town !! ) Leave a Comment

by globetrott The church may be entered by a side-door and you may have a glimpse into the great interior through a glass-wall - this might be something worth a try in the time of winter - 04.11.-28.3.2003 - when the monestary may be visited ONLY with a guided tour ( daily at 11.00 a.m. and 02.00 p.m.) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ But of course the church is also part of the guided tour and it is certainly worth the 7,- € entrance fee for the whole tour of the monestary. by globetrott this is in my eyes the most beautiful part of the monestary - with its great fresco on the ceiling by Paul Troger and many old books and even an old globe Leave a Comment

by globetrott Have a look for these wonderful colors - these frescos were made between 1702 and 1736 , when the monestary got it's baroque face. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In all rooms inside the monestary pics may be taken, but with NO FLASH and NO TRIPOD ! But all fresos are lighted very well - so it was easy to take the pics with a normal 100ASA-film Leave a Comment

by globetrott In the 12th century the monestary also became a school - and it still is a school for 830 pupils today. The monks also founded their famous library already in the 12th century and Melk became one of the most important schools in Austria. Leave a Comment

by globetrott In the beginning there was just a castle - and a part of it may still be seen inside the park - the castle had been given to the monks in the year 1089 A.D. and the monks built their monestary around the castle step by step. Leave a Comment
