This 900-year-old monastery was founded by Margrave Leopold III. Legend has it that he built it on the very spot where he found his wife's veil which the wind had ripped off her head on their wedding day eight years before. One day when he was out hunting, Leopold had a vision of the Virgin Mary and found the unharmed veil hanging on a bush, so this is where he founded the monastery. However, this is nothing but a legend and in fact there have been settlements in the area before.
Today, the newly renovated monastery is open to visitors all year round and several different tours are offered:
The Sacred Tour gives an insight into the medieval part with the cloister, the church and famous works of art such as the Verdun Altar, Nicolas Verdun's masterpiece consisting of 51 enamel panels depicting scenes from the bible.
The Imperial Tour leads the visitor through the baroque part of the buildings, including the authentically furnished rooms of Emperor Charles VI and the museum which harbours an impressive collection of religious art dating from the Middle ages to modern times.
The Wine Cellar Tour is specifically designed for those wanting to find out more about the modern wine production in Austria's oldest vineyard. With this tour, visitors decend into the wine cellar and it concludes with a wine tasting in the monastery's own wine shop.
Another way to explore the monastery are the art workshops offered in the newly built studio. Specifically designed tours are meant to inspire amateur artists of all ages. In the modern studio they have the chance to realize their ideas.
Right on the monastery grounds are also three restaurants/cafés offering traditional Austrian cuisine such as Wiener Schnitzel and different Mehlspeisen (cakes) like Apfelstrudel.

Mr. Martin Essl is the CEO of a large retail company here in Austria with the name Baumax. And he is also an enthusiastic collector of art.
Because his collection has grown so rapidly in the past years, he has founded a museum in Klosterneuburg with the name "Sammlung Essl" where he shares his collection with the public. It is close to the corporate headquarters of Baumax in Klosterneuburg.
