This self-service-cafe is maybe the cafe with the most precious frescos in Austria, BUT most of the tourists will miss it, when they visit Stift Melk.Quite often I had been in Melk on a sunny day with thousands of tourists in the monastery and still I was almost alone in that cafe. For this part of the monastery you have to pay an extra-fee of 2 Euros and could go there, even when you don't go into the museum.

I had a coffee and a Sachertorte . The choice is limited to 2-4 cakes, simple coffee and packed sweets, BUT the main reason to go there is in order to see the lovely frescos !

Cafe Central in Melk

Cafe Central is my favorite place to have ice-cream. There is a real ice-cream parlor around the corner, but you will realize that only a few tourists will go there, while Cafe Central is always quite full and offers also a garden-restaurant with the view on the monastery.

For Icecream I normally take Vanilla- and Blue-Berries (Heidelbeer), but they also have nice cakes and great coffee and ice-cups.

Directions: Cafe Central is directely at the town-square, at the side in direction of the Danube. You will pass by it, when entering the town from the Danube.

The artistic garden pavilion

The baroque garden pavilion and its famous paintings by Johann Wenzel Bergl, is a wonderful building with a splendid architecture. This restaurant is one piece of art in the middle of the park. The construction is realized into a beautiful setting, and with a special sense of taste. The inside of the pavilion is a real art exhibition, with beautiful pictures, a real art sightseeing in the culinary art. Here, a coffee to drink is a real joy for the eyes and soul.

The Abbey Restaurant

Directly at the entrance to the Stift Melk, is placed this handsome restaurant with terrace. Familiar atmospheres, swift and friendly personnel, a full-time warm kitchen, are some of the many goodness of this restaurant. There are 600 seats in the restaurant, distributes in the ground floor and in the two halls, with baroque paintings, on the first floor. On the garden terrace, there are 150 seats. This restaurant is opened daily and offers, to the many visitors, a traditional Austrian kitchen, or many exotic menus.

This terrace, in the middle of the garden, is very popular in summers. A small, quiet little hour, on the fashionable terrace, after a walk in the beautiful baroque garden, is a full of pleasure, in the middle of the nature.

The restauran in the Garden
pavillion

This restaurant is in the very pretty garden pavillion and is extremely bright and cheerful with lots of natural light. In summer food is served on the terrace outside and I think there is also a large restaurant downstairs but we ate on the ground floor. Service came with a smile and a rather kitchy traditional costume. It was also efficient and reasonably quick.

We had lunch in this restaurant from a set menu. There was a plate of salad with strips of ham to start, beef with potatoes and vegetables to follow and a light-as-a-souffle orange and cream gateau for desert. It was plain food but extremely tasty. Personally I was so relieved that there were no dumplings lurking anywhere, I thought it was like manna from heaven - well it is a monastery so maybe St Colman was looking out for me. The very best thing about this lunch was the absolutely astonishing price of EUR12.50, a really pleasant surprise having payed more than double that the previous lunchtime in Vienna.

The pavilion houses a buffet where you have some coffee and cake and anything else you want.

Apfelstrudel or Sachertorte is ALWAYS a good choice :-)) ! And you can a "Kleiner Schwarzer" (Short Black) or a "Melange" (that's black coffee with much milk and cream) ....

Tea on the terrace

Why not stop for ice cream or a coffee at the Monastery's Pavilion, which is located on the hilltop immediately adjacent to the beautful gardens. There are occasionally evening concerts inside the Pavillion.

Café Restaurant Central is a café in the centre of Melk and is a good place to meet people as well as to play a game of pool - there is a table there - a rarity around these parts of Lower Austria.

Their home made toasted sandwiches are well worth going for - otherwise the food menu is a bit on the tired side - nevertheless good for a quick snack or a coffee at non-inflated prices.
