coming to Melk by train
  • Tip Rating:
  • Coming to Melk by train is easy, when you take the main train-line between Linz and Vienna. Simply make sure, your train will stop in Melk as well - NOT every train does. Some trains even go through a tunnel and you will not see the monastery at all ! The one-way-ticket 2nd class from Vienna is 16,20 Euros Direct trains need about 100 minutes and will leave Vienna-Westbahnhof at least once per hour ! At the other bank of the Danube is a different trainline. These trains run between Vienna-Nord ( Franz-Josephs-Bahnhof) and St.Valentin. You have to cross the Danube by ship in order to get there - all cruises start and end with that station. THIS is also the train that takes you - e.g. at the end of a cruise - home to Vienna from Duenstein or Krems !!

    get to Melk by car
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are various possibilities to park your car. The easiest is, when you follow the signposts for "Stift Melk" It takes you to a large parking for 100 buses and hundreds of cars and most of the places are under shady trees. Another large parking is next to the ship-station - you may see it on my 2nd picture, that I took from the monastery. - both of the 2 parkings are free of charge and don't have time-limitations ! Of course you may park also in the centre of town, but parking there is limited by time (90 minutes) When driving on the highway / Autobahn A1 you will see Stift Melk already from a big distance. There is a seperate exit for MELK !! When driving along the Danube at the left shore of the river you may see Stift Melk only a few seconds, and most drivers never get this moment. In Melk there is one of the few car-bridges across the Danube.

    Biking along the Danube
  • Tip Rating:
  • Biking along the Danube became very popular a few years ago and when getting close Melk you have to choose carfully the right bank of the river : the right bank includes Melk, Schloss Schoenbuehl and the castle-ruins of Aggstein - THIS side of the river is a bit steep at some place, while on the left bank of the river the biking-tracks are almost flat and easy. Hotels and restaurants offer special facilities for bikers and you may even book an "organized" bike-tour from PASSAU / Germany to VIENNA. All hotels will be prebooked for you and your luggage will be taken from one hotel to the next one. There is even a bus, taking care of you in case of an accident or a stormy day or whatever problem with your rented bike, that is also a part of the package. You will need 4-6 days from Passau to Vienna and Melk is at about halfway. Many tourist groups come to Melk with the bus. It is a comfortable driving possibility and an agreeable travel modality, to admire in silence the lovely setting. On the highway A1 or on the national highways B1, B3, and B33, one can reach the town Melk, from miscellaneous directions. For approximately 30 bus and 250 small cars, it is park possibility, in the big Stift parking place. The modern buses, this to, in or from Melk drive, are an important transportation possibility for this town.

On the way to Melk, by car
  • Tip Rating:
  • The town Melk is placed at the Danube valley, 85 km far from Vienna. By car, is very simple, to reach this place. From east or west, one can drive to Melk, over the highway A1 (exit of Melk), or over the national highways B1 or B33. From north, one can drive over the Danube Bridge over the national highway B3. From Vienna, one can on the highway A1 drive, in direction Linz until Melk. The trip, on the highway is agreeable, and doesn't last long and the magical routes over the national highways, drive through a splendid landscape.

    cruising to Melk
  • Tip Rating:
  • Melk is a regular stop for almost every cruise-ship on the Danube and besides of the hotelships going across Europe there is a regular cruise-schedule for the Wachau ( the Danube-valley between Melk and Krems). Such a cruise will take almost the whole day, when you go to and fro Melk and I may highly recommend to take the ship to Duernstein, explore that lovely little village with an interesting monastery and a castle-ruin high above the valley. Several inns are to be found there, where you may taste the local wines. When you started at Vienna you may take back the train from Duernstein to Vienna. cruises on the Danube --- --- --- --- --- DDSG - Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft --- --- --- --- --- Wachau --- --- --- --- --- Brandtner Schifffahrt

    DDSG versus Brandtner
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are 2 major shipping-companies for cruises between Krems and Melk - in the so-called "Wachau". In order to make it more confusing, their ships mostly have the same time-table, instead of going at different times in order to make it more efficient for the customers. Obviously their timetable is matched well with the schedule of trains and buses. DDSG is a big company - it is the "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft" and they offer tickets in combination with OEBB ( the autrian train-system) Their ships are always quite full and you have to queue already, when getting onboard. BUT they have a lot more space on the outside-decks. Brandtner Schiffahrt is a private company with smaller ships, less space at the outside-decks, but the better service in the restaurants. Choose for yourself what is more convenient !

    Transportation - take your pick!
  • Tip Rating:
  • You can get to Melk from Vienna very easily either by road, rail or river. This last option is obviously a particularly attractive one but I'm not sure if the cruise boats run all winter long. Try this website: www.ddsg-blue-danube.at Trains leave the Westbahnhof station approximately every hour. The journey takes about an hour and a half, depending on the type of train, how many stops it makes etc. Just make sure you only get on one that will be stopping at Melk as some go straight through. By car or coach take the Autobahn A1 for speed but if you have time on your hands opt for the scenic route on the country roads through the Wachau Valley.

    How to get there
  • Tip Rating:
  • Stift Melk is directly on the motorway A1, half the way from Vienna to Linz. It is a huge yellow building on a hill and it is lightened at night ... So you cannot oversee it! Take exit "Melk" and follow the sign to "Stift Melk". It is a great stopover when you are on the way to Vienna or Salzburg and you should not miss it!

    By train
  • Tip Rating:
  • Melk also has a trainstation. But it is small one and so it is served only from regional and local trains. If you are on tour with fast trains you have to change the train in Sankt Pölten or Vienna. Look at the website of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) to check schedules of trains to Melk.
