The best way of getting up the Rax, and by far the easiest in terms of physical effort, is to take the Raxseilbahn - a cable car, with the base station at 535m in Hirschwang connected to the top station at some 1547m. The cable car costs about EUR 16 for a return - and goes every half an hour. The views are outstanding from the cable car and it ensures that you can start walking without already being out of puff.
