Where the Rax is at its most beautiful, neither hectic, noise nor stress exists. The Knappenhof is an oasis of peace in the middle of a wildly romantic mountain landscape - a place to recharge your batteries. • Take the Raxbahn

The best way of getting up the Rax, and by far the easiest in terms of physical effort, is to take the Raxseilbahn - a cable car, with the base station at 535m in Hirschwang connected to the top station at some 1547m. The cable car costs about EUR 16 for a return - and goes every half an hour. The views are outstanding from the cable car and it...

  • KNOW YOUR SHOES & SOCKS!!!

This is a warning indeed!!! *Every year in our region at least 100 people (tourists & day-trippers mostly) fall victim to horrific accidents and deaths due to the wrong gear.My father and friends who are with the mountain rescue team have absolute HORROR stories on the findings .... some climbers only appearing after months when the snow melting...

Reichenau What to Pack

  • morgenhund's Profile Photo

by morgenhund Written Jul 4, 2005

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Luggage and bags: Travel light! Walking at 1500m or more above sea level if you are not used to it may sap you.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Sturdy walking shoes are recommended, especially the further up the Raxalpe you go. The higher you get up, the windier and colder it gets - take headgear including ear protection to prevent earache from the wind.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: If you have weak ankles or knee joints, take the precaution of taking tubular bandages, support bandages etc. - a lot of the wallking is on uneven ground.

Photo Equipment: The views are spectacular although it can be quite hazy - a filter or two for your camera is recommended.

Miscellaneous: Take plenty of drinking water - in particular if you are not wanting to splash out for mineral water - a lot of the huts only have bottled drinking water.
