Goettlesbrunn is a small village just a few km north of Rohrau and there you may see an interesting and really beautiful highway-restaurant & hotel the "Kumpf-Raststaette".
Gottfried Kumpf is a well-known contemporary Austrian painter and I really like his works of art, including his cute sculptures of animals.
Goettlesbrunn is also home of my friend Manfred ( MEdelmann) - he is a vinter there and his family runs a small hotel - see my hotel-tip !

In Petronell-Carnunthum you may not only find interesting remains of the Roman empire, but also a lovely romanic chapel - close to the excarvation-area and open-air-museum. Unfortunately you may not enter that church, but at least you may walk around it and take a closer look at the lovely decorations, the best ones are above the entrance-gate !
Just enlarge my pictures in order to see these fine details !

Bad Deutsch-Altenburg is a well-known spa and it is just 8km north of Rohrau. Besides the healthy spa - that was well known already at the roman times - Bad Deutsch-Altenburg has a really interesting Roman museum with some surprising exhibits : just take a look at the old roman keys, that do not look so very different of the keys of the early 20th century. In that museum you may see plenty of great sculptures, Roman coins and juwelery.
The Roman Museum in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg is open :
Monday 12.00-05.00p.m. & Tuesday-Sunday 10.00a.m.-05.00p.m.

Heidentor is the name of one of the most popular Roman remains in Austria, and it is just 3 km north of Rohrau, a bit outside of the town of Petronell-Carnunthum. The giant arch that is still visible today is just one of 4 arches that were built under emperor Constantinus as a triumph-gate with inscriptions reminding the population of the great achievements and victories of Constantinus. Carnunthum had about 50.000 inhabitants during the roman times and was the capital of the province upper-pannonia.
On my last picture you may see a small-scale-model of the monument and may get an idea, what it looked like in Roman times.
You may drive to Heidentor and will find a big parking there, it includes even a table and benches for a picknick !

Petronell-Carnunthum is just 5 km north of Rohrau and it is well known for its remains of the Roman empire, including several amphi-theatres, excarvations of a roman village and a great museum, showing reconstructions of the limes, the artificial wall that was built around almost all borderlines of the Roman empire - see my last picture ! Most of the sights may be entered free of charge, only at the excarvation-area with the open-air-museum you have to pay a small entrance-fee.

Schlosshof is the largest castle in Austria's countryside, maybe for the size of the castle and its surrounding parks or for both of them.
The palace of Schlosshof is in a distance of just 15km from Rohrau and a visit might easily be combined with each other ! For a long time the palace in Schlosshof was totally neglected by the tourists and by the owners (the state), simply because it was just a few km from the Iron Curtain, at a place where most tourists would never get to.
Schlosshof is hard to be found on most maps - it is 10km west of Bratislava, and about 15km north of Rohrau.
