Berghaus Hochschneeberg is in a distance of maybe 300 meters from the station "Hochschneeberg" of the Salamander-train, in a hight of 1800 meters above sea-level. This building has a very long tradition and history, even the austrian Emperor Kaiser Franz Josef was here and he even spent a night in the hotel ! And when you take a look at the great furniture and decorations of this restaurant you may think that not a lot has changed since the time of the emperor. Take a look around into the various side-rooms, it is one of the most interesting buildings I ever saw !
Favorite Dish: game-dishes are excellent in this restaurant and for desert I may highly recommend : Schneeberg-Krapfen, a local speciality : see my local customs-tip !

This stop at Buchtelwirt might have had its origin at the time of steamtrains, that needed fresh water before they could go uphill. And so this small mountain-restaurant called Buchtelwirt was built at exactely the place where the train stops for some minutes, at the "station Baumgartner" in a hight of 1.400 meters above sea-level, it is the last-but-one station of the train and there will be a "technical" stop-over of 5 minutes, a place to powder your nose, enjoy the landscape, and take photographs !
There is a small restaurant inside the building and a covered terrace with a scenic view, a great place to spend your time, while waiting for the train.
Favorite Dish: Taste their "Buchteln" : a fluffy cake with a lot of yeast inside and filled with plum-stew (Powidl) or with curd-cheese and raisins. Both sorts are 2,50 euros each and upon demand they will also pack them to be taken away.

Schneeberg-Krapfen
is the most popular and best desert that you will get in the Berghaus Hochschneeberg and you will hardly find it at any other place !
When you enter the building, you will see some of them displayed, see my 2nd picture !
Its certainly not a good choice for someone who is on a diet !
Favorite Dish: OK, so I forgot my diet for a few minutes and ordered such a special desert and a coffee :
Schneeberg-Krapfen are made of Brandteig / profiteroles, a sort of cake that has not sugar at all in it. This is why it was filled with whipped cream and cranberries and it was also a good idea to get a sharp knife served togeather with a spoon, so it was easy to eat it !
The coffee was very strong and tasted fine as well, it was a good combination and the total price was 7 Euros in 2007 !

When ever I go to Schneeberg I take a rest in the restaurant on top of the mountain, because I really love their Schneebergkrapferl !
Favorite Dish: Try out Schneeberg-Krapferl, they are very sweet and unfortunately they also have much too many Kalories

while waiting for our train up the snowy mountain, we went to sit at a cafe for coffee and cakes. we took a sit outside to enjoy the sun and the lake view....
But what amazes me in the cafe, is this very very huge marzipan doll!!!!
Favorite Dish: I had cheese cake and others had black forest cake, cherry cheescake - there are slices, strudels, tiramisu etc offered.
