Brauhaus Schwechat: Great place, great beer, great food!

Excellent is how i would describe our lunch experience here.

We had come from Vienna and had checked in our luggages at the airport, but didn't feel like going back to the city for the remaining hours before the flight -- it was a chilly Sunday and the city seemed slow and quiet, so we decided to find a place to eat closer to the airport. We had been in Schwechat the weekend before, and had passed this this beer garden on our way from the train station to our hotel. Not having too much expectation, we decided to risk it, and were we in for a pleasant surprise!

Place was quite full with the usual Sunday family crowd, but we found places in the no-smoking area. The waiters were extremely friendly, and brought our beers quickly. Apparently, this Brauhaus is owned by a beer brand, Schwechater Bier and the big building with a modernist design actually houses a museum on the ground level, which included distillery equipment. We ordered a garlic cream soup, which was good and warm, and soon enough, our barbecued ribs arrived -- and it was huge!!! As we were going by the price, and knowing that in most places in Europe this is just good for a "normal" sized plate, we were so surprised with what arrived. The serving was supposed to be for 2 people, but it could easily feed an entire family of four! There were potato wedges, and cream on the side. The meat was tender and was very good -- the serving was obviously too much for us that the friendly waiter even offered to wrap up for us the leftovers if we wanted! And as I said the other fantastic thing too was the price, because the huge plate cost us only about 15 euros!

The interior of this place is quite big, and has a pleasant design and feel to it. There are tables on the garden, close to a small children's playground -- great for when the weather is nice. According to their card, the restaurant itself sits 160 people, the garden around 200, the museum (which we did not have time to visit, 100), and seminar rooms which can be rented. The building sits on a huge vacant place which is used for a weekend market (we chanced upon it on our first visit to Schwechat), but most times it is empty, so parking is no problem at all. On one side of the building is one of the beer company's old train now there just for display.

This place is highly recommended for those who have time to kill before their flights, would like to enjoy a leisurely good meal and good beer, but without having to go to Vienna.

Favorite Dish: Their barbecued ribs are very good!

Merzendorfer's al fresco

I could recommend a very nice and very good (not too expensive) restaurant near the river Danube in the village of Fischamend, only 4 kms distant from Vienna`s airport.
It's the renowned restaurant "MERZENDORFER", where you can get fish-dishes and all the other Austrian specialities. In summer there is a nice garden for al-fresco dining and also it's inside outlay is rather comfortable and convenient.
Unfortunately there is no website in English, but have a look at the german version at http://tinyurl.com/6jfusw
Take care, the restaurant is closed on Sundays and mondays and during the month of August. It is advisable to make a reservation by phone, they do speak English !

Favorite Dish: Merzendorfer's "Fischbeuschelsuppe" (not to be translated, a kind of Bouillabaisse), all kinds of sweet-water fish etc.
