Schneeberg-Krapfen is a desert that you can get only at the Berghaus Hochschneeberg and when you enter the house, you will see some of them displayed, see my 2nd picture !
OK, so I forgot my diet for a few minutes and ordered such a special desert and a coffee :
Schneeberg-Krapfen are made of Brandteig / profiteroles, a sort of cake that has not sugar at all in it. This is why it was filled with whipped cream and cranberries and it was also a good idea to get a sharp knife served togeather with a spoon, so it was easy to eat it !
The coffee was very strong and tasted fine as well, it was a good combination and the total price was 7 Euros in 2007 !
Berghaus Hochschneeberg is a sort of "panopticum" of all sorts of things collected over the last 150 years and some of my favorite things that I saw there are real works of art, made of sugar and chocolate showing the hotel Berghaus, Sisi-chapel and the old steam-train. It needs special people to manage such a special place, so you might be not surprised to learn that the hotel & restaurant are under the management of a couple holding university-degrees, but the summer on Schneeberg is their hobby and they are proud to show you around.
This is a link for all of you who understand german :
Essen am Hochschneeberg
See the armada of snow-cannons, I counted 20 of them and at Hirschenkogel in Semmering you can even see them stading there all summertime and can take a look how hese machines are working: water is spread out of hundreds of small holes, while a fresh breeze is blown by a ginat fan. It needs a lot of electricity and a lot of water, but it seems to work for the business and in the warm winter of the year 2006/07 only the small slopes had artificial snow, while the rest of the mountain was green or rather grey and muddy.
There is a small exhibition - it is free of charge and it is called "Informationsstelle Weltkulturerbe Semmeringbahn und Bahnwanderweg" - inside the trainstation of the village Semmering and it shows lots of old postcards, booklets etc. about the Suedbahn & the beginnings of tourism at Semmering.
This exhibition is open daily till october 26th
from 10.00a.m. - 12.00 and 01.30p.m. - 04.00p.m
for groups also at other times, simply

Oberleutnant Eduard Nitter was the 1st daredevil to fly with an airplaine over the semmering at may 3rd, 1912.
Dem ersten kühnen Überflieger des Semmerings
Feldpilot Oberleutnant Eduar Nitter
seine Kameraden und Verehrer
That is what the inscription is telling us, and in my last picture you can see the type of airplain, that he used for this daredevil-expedition ;~)
This is a series of pics that I had made at Rax : Butterflies obviously enjoy licking the salt from human bodies or pants, the older and more dirty, the even better and more tasty for them. Something similar happened to me in Brienz, on top of Rothorn in a hight of 2900 meters above sea-level.
The butterfly was searching for the best places on my trousers and obviously found some sort of taste that he could not find otherwise in the alpine region of Rax.
the best place to meet butterflies that way is at open cliffs, where the warm air is moving upwards in a way that butterflies and also paragliders like most.

Did you expect to see any grasshoppers in alpine hights of 1700 meters ? Well, the 2 on my photograph are obviously working hard in order to make sure the population of grasshoppers is growing. I took around 100 pics with various programs of my camera, with flash and without, BUT they simply did not care at all, although my camera was in a distance of just 30-40 cm.
Below Ottohaus there is a flat part with various areas covered by a sort of plant that indicates in my experience that there is a lake or at least some water below, and this where I saw that lovely couple of grashoppers !
