There are trains and buses etc that will take you to various set points in the Wienerwald, however to get around to see many of the sights, you will need a car or a tour bus. I had to settle for a tour bus, which to me was not the ideal, but at the very least, they didn't drop us off at ceramic and pottery factories or the like, which does happen so often on day tours. It was a half day tour which I found to be quite comprehensive, but I must confess to having gone past many a town or castle or photo opportunity, that I would love to have been able to stop at. It is for this reason, that I will certainly lash out and hire a car next time.
The tour can be organised through your hotel and the company sends a mini bus to pick you up. After picking up several others at various hotels, we were then taken to the Vienna State Opera where we were put on a bigger bus and taken to the depot of Vienna Sightseeing Tours in the area of Sudbahnhof. We were then transferred yet again on to the bus that would take us on the tour. It seemed like a lot of messing around to me, but that was the way it was done. I felt fortunate to have an excellent guide who spoke several languaes fluently and seemed to know his history and other necessary info very well. After the tour, we were dropped off at the State Opera and not back at the hotel as I would have thought.
As it happened, this suited me as I just spent the afternoon wandering around my city of dreams.
