    Crystal clear waters of Almsee

If you hike to the southern part of the lake you will find where the various streams and mountain runoffs meet the lake. The water here is crystal clear. In the summer, a cool refreshing bath here must be great. Unfortunately, I was too scared to try. In retrospect, who the heck would have known!

Almsee Restaurants

This is an excellent place to eat. It's situated on the road from Grünau (village, 10km distance) to Almsee (lake, 3 km distance).
A family-run restaurant with a good selection of food, also for vegetarians recommandable, the food-style is austrian, but very special combined. Service is fast and very friendly.

After having had the meal, the surroundings invite to go for a walk: you can turn into the woods, try a quick (icy!!) swim in the rivulet or wander around the almsee (lake).. very relaxing.

Favorite Dish: You should'nt miss the trouts (they come from the mountain rivulet which flows behind the house), I recommend "Forelle Müllerin" , roasted in the pan with butter!! d e l i c i o u s :-))

Almsee Transportation

  • Almsee -lake from above

Hi, maybe you wonder how to get to this beautiful place. 3 possibilities:

    1) there is a bus going from the town GMUNDEN to the village GRÜNAU (im Almtal) . (around half an hour) the lake Almsee is situated behind the village (around 15min)
    2) take the train (ALMTALBAHN) from the city WELS to Grünau. then the bus. (there are also taxis)
this is the site for the austrian train association : www.oebb.at
    3) if you are driving you find an exact route-description at the site: www.tiscover.de/gruenau under "Anreise"

but ones you are in the Village Grünau, you just drive and drive until you arrive at the end of the valley! ;-)

Its a very peaceful place. Enjoy and relax!

    Pause to capture a memory.

by seamandrew Written Mar 30, 2003

Almsee has a trail that surrounds the lake. It is quite a wonderful hike regardless of what time of year it is. I walked it in about 10 cm of snow. The hike takes about 1.5 to 2 hours walking briskly and 3 hours if you take your time. It took us about 3 because we stopped for pictures many times.
    Be sure to enjoy it!

Equipment: The walk doesn't take too long so pack really light (nothing really except what you need to feel cozy). Definitely bring the camera!

Favorite thing: A perfect picnic spot near Linz , Almsee is a beautiful and natural lake. A short walk from the parking space leads one to this most amazing spot in Upper Austria.Carry a lot of food and drinks and a large mat so that you can spend many hours here and enjoy nature at it's best.Expect to see a lot of families here on a bright , sunny day.

    Snowangels in Almsee

Favorite thing: What I love about Almsee is how pristine and untouched it is. Even with the two buildings on it's far side, the lake and surrounding valley are just breathtaking. I really wish I had my wedding there.

Fondest memory: Being in Almsee made me feel like I was 5 years old. I threw myself down in the snow and made snow angels. That was fun!
