adolf hitler was born in braunau on april 20th 1889. hitler and his parents lived in braunau until 1894. adolf hitler's father was a customs inspector in braunau. pictured is a yellow building near the tree on the right that was hitler's house. there is a stone marker in front of the house. there is really is not much to do or see in braunau but it is an interesting place for students of 20th century history.
I was told that this is not the birthplace but the place where he lived after birth. It is a simple building housing a library ("Volksbücherei"). It seems that the place is frequently visited by fomer Nazis (the Soviet and other communists used to call them "fascists" which is clearly a flattering because compared to the Nazi crimes the joke character Mussolini's "Fascismo" was a sorts cabaretistic phenomenon).
st. stephen's church was built in 1492 and it's spire is the third tallest in austria. the clock on the church spire was added in the 17th century. there are two interesting tombs in the church, the tomb of bishop maverkincher and grave of hans staininger.
The town parish church in mainly gothic style is quite huge for a town which at this time had only 2000 inhabitants. The spire is with its 101 meters the third highest in Austria! It is an indicator that Braunau was quite a rich and prosperous town.
Nothing at or around the house indicates that Hitler was living there. The text on the stone reads. in English:
FOR PEACE FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY
NEVER AGAIN FASCISM
MILLIONS OF DEATHS ADMONISH
What a difference: In Gori, Georgia, the birthplace of Josip Wissaronovich Dzhugashvili aka Stalin is preserved the way that a sorts of temple is built around the rather modest house of birth praising the great son of the city. See my Gori page for this!
pictured is the bridge over the inn river looking in the direction of simbach am inn in germany. near simbach am inn is the village of marktl. marktl is the birth place of pope benedict XVI.
