As Enns is believed to be the oldest town in Austria, it was no surprise to see the very tall Tower in the historic town. In the main square - no, but that is where the Tower sits surrounded by the town square and numerous burgher town houses.
Enns was enjoying a prosperous time in history and projects were being constructed. One was the 16th century bridge built across the Danube, and the other, construction of the Tower. Four years later, the Tower was complete.

The free-standing tower, the only one of its kind in the country, has served as a steeple, fire detection station, clock tower and town watch.

A town watchman was appointed for the Tower. According to records, the tower guard day and night had to step onto the open corridor every 15 minutes and call "ho!" for all clear. If he noticed a fire, then the Bell had to strike 6 times, meaning a fire in the city, then 5 peals,4, 3,2 and once for fires elsewhere.
Today, the former living room of the watchman is used as a hotel room. So, if you want a different experience then stay inside the Tower at the Pixel Hotel.
The website link shows what the Hotel rooms look like and says there is a steep climb of 71 steps to the Hotel, something to consider when booking a room.

I thought the Main Square was up with the best I have seen. The square is surrounded by Baroque houses painted mainly in pastels although some are a little brighter. A walk around and I found lots of different details on the homes, and many with wrought iron signage hanging above the building's door. The facades on the buildings are wonderful, many with stucco work and all were different and lovely.
On a blue house, there was a decoration like a baby may have just been born in that house, cute!
It's a lovely square to sit outside at one of the many Cafes where outdoor seating is available!

DON'T MISS A WALK AROUND THIS SQUARE!

The Schlossgasse winds itself around the base of the Castle, alright to do with the car. When I was trying to find my way into Ennsegg Castle, I found the pathway in my photo which was leading towards the Castle. What I didn't realize, is that it led to a wonderful look-out over the Danube River and the flats and the town of Enns - nice! Worth going for a look!
